Bleeding Gums - Why Do I Have Them?

Trusted Health Products

One of the prominent issues that some people experience, when tending to their mouth and attempting to complete their oral hygiene practices, is bleeding gums or sensitive gums. Some suffer from heightened sensitivity in their gums. This can make brushing and even flossing uncomfortable and cause gums to bleed.

While bleeding gums can be an infrequent occurrence, they can also be the sign of a really costly and painful health issue. One of the more notable signs and symptoms of gum disease is bleeding gums. But just because you experience a little pink on your toothbrush is not necessarily cause for alarm or concern.

Those who are really vigilant about their oral hygiene can sometimes overdo their daily upkeep. While it is imperative to brush, floss, and rinse your mouth, some may heed that recommendation a bit too literally. Those who are very self-conscious about their teeth or their breath can sometimes treat their mouth in excess. This manifests itself in brushing too harshly or pushing the floss too deeply into the gum tissue. Our gums themselves are naturally sensitive and should be handled and tended to delicately, not with too much pressure.

However, there can be a much more significant and consequential reason that someone may be experiencing gum bleeding. Those who suffer from gingivitis suffer from many painful symptoms, one of which is gum bleeding. This can be slight in the way it appears in the mouth, or it can transition into increased amounts of blood and even painful, ugly blood blisters can develop. This tends to happen when the gingivitis is not properly treated or is ignored. This can result in continued gum issues and longstanding jaw problems.

Sometimes what causes bleeding gums is actually not a result of hygiene or lack thereof, but because of specific medications that are being consumed. Medications that can commonly cause the gums to bleed are those that are used as blood thinners. This allows any type of injury - even the slightest brush against sensitive and exposed gums - to produce bleeding. Another contributing factor to gum bleeding is medical conditions that compromise the immune system. Also, because of the hormonal aspects of pregnancy, those who are expecting may sometimes experience sensitive gums.

A similar contributing factor to bleeding gums is vitamin deficiency. Many would be surprised of the number of issues they sometimes intermittently experience that are caused solely by a lack of vitamins and minerals. One of the most common deficiencies that cause gum bleeding is that from vitamin C. This is an easy fix for those who aren't a fan of vitamins or don't like swallowing pills. Upping the consumption of oranges will correct the lack of this particular vitamin in the body. Also lack of calcium is linked to bleeding gums so make sure you're drinking your milk. Your oral health will thank you for it!
