Imagine a baby crawling into a pasture and sidling up to a cow for breakfast. Ridiculous image right? I mean, after all - cows milk is made for cows! Yet millions of babies swill billions of gallons of cows milk every day.
Were probably the only species that thinks its normal to feed its babies the milk of another species. Breast milk - the human kind - is tailor made for babies - the human kind. August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Here are a few facts of which you may not have been aware - food for thought, literally.
Breastfeeding is soothing, comforting, and it promotes bonding between mother and child. It can decrease infant crying, irritability, sleeplessness, and night time feedings.
Mother's milk is the first line of defense against an assortment of diseases, crises, and maladies including sudden infant death syndrome, cardiovascular disease, celiac disease, high blood pressure, and digestive disorders.
Even the suckling motion during breastfeeding can help babies avoid dental problems and sleeping problems - snoring, sleep apnea - in later life.
The anti-infective properties of mothers milk function like antibiotics by shielding baby from chronic infections of the ears, respiratory system, and urinary tract.
It promotes healthy eyesight, muscular development; and boosts speech, intelligence, and cognitive development.
Colostrum, the first milk mothers produce, is a full-service superfood for newborns. To accommodate a newborns delicate digestive system, colostrum delivers concentrated nutrients in doses a baby's system can handle. It gently stimulates the bowels, helps expel excess bilirubin [which is a waste product formed during the delivery], and helps to protect the baby from becoming jaundiced.
It contains immune cells and antibodies that protect and nourish the infant efficiently and thoroughly. Colostrum also provides proteins, vitamin A and other nutrients an infant needs in concentrations the neonate can tolerate.
Studies have shown that breastfed babies are less likely to develop Type I diabetes. They are less likely to become morbidly obese and they are more likely to survive beyond their first months birthdate - and that's no small matter since the United States has the highest infant mortality rate of any other wealthy nation! The World Health Organization recommends that babies be breastfed for their first 6 months.
A mothers breast milk is as unique as a fingerprint. It cant be copied - and its designed specifically and exclusively for her newborn. Its fresh. Its free. It requires no mixing and no refrigeration. Its a perfect food and a foolproof plan.
