The Health Benefits Of Sopropo

Trusted Health Products

Have you ever heard of sopropo? If not you aren't alone. Although this fruit is largely unknown in the United States, there are many health benefits, some of which are yet to be discovered.

Largely known as sopropo in the Dominican Republic where it is more well known, in the U.S. it is often referred to as bitter melon, bitter squash, or goya. No matter what you choose to call it, learn the health benefits that you can gain by including this fruit into your diet.

The Uses

When sopropo is prepared it is generally green or in the beginning stages of turning yellow. In addition to the fruit itself, the leaves can also be eaten when they are green. Chinese cuisine uses sopropo for its bitter properties, adding it to herbal tea, soup, and stir-fry.

Each culture and nation uses sopropo in a different way. The fruit has remained popular through much of Southern Asia with everything from traditional Indian dishes to extras served with hot tandoori bread in Pakistan. There are even soft drinks with sopropo as the base. Although obscure, when you shop in the right places, this fruit is available year-round.

The Benefits

Not only does sopropo have many health benefits when eaten, it also has been used in both African and Asian herbal medicines for many years. When the fruit is readily available, it is used often to relieve common problems that may be occurring, where other types of medication might not be available.

Because of how bitter sopropo is, many people may be deterred from trying a dish prepared with it. When done right, the fruit not only tastes good, but brings many of the best vitamins and minerals needed for great health. It is rich in beta-carotene, calcium, iron, vitamin B, vitamin C, and potassium.

Eating Sopropo

Preparing this fruit for a meal is relatively easy. Cut it into two equal halves and remove the seeds along with the hard core. These seeds can be eaten, unless they are too hard. If the fruit is too bitter for your taste, place it in boiling water for a few minutes. This will dull the strong taste, making it more enjoyable for some.

Although you can, it is not normal to peel before eating. The sopropo can be eaten in a dish raw or cooked depending on your preference. Experiment to find what you like best. After you purchase the fruit, it should be refrigerated and eaten within a few days.

The sopropo is becoming more popular in the United States, for its flavor as well as the many health benefits that can be gained. Try this fruit and enjoy the health advantages it can bring.
