A dental implant is a form of cosmetic dentistry in which artificial tooth roots are used to support the crown or tooth-like replacements. It is basically a form of prosthetic dentistry. People without teeth find it quite difficult to chew food which can affect overall health in many ways.

There are many benefits of using dental implants as it offers the stability and strength to chew food. These implants also help to maintain jaw bone and facial features. There are many reasons for loss of a tooth and some of the most common reasons include gum diseases, tooth decay, congenital defects, root canal failure, tooth injury and so forth.

Consultation, Procedures And Recovery

It is essential to consult a dentist or oral surgeon to determine if dental implants are necessary. The dental professionals examine the teeth thoroughly and evaluate the quality of the bone and its density. X-rays and CT scans are taken to determine the structure of the bone and the exact place where the implants need to be fixed. Based on several factors such as oral hygiene, oral tissues and habits, the dental implant treatment plans are fixed by the dentist.

With the advances in various technological features, the dental implants are practically similar to the ordinary teeth. Although dental implants are placed in a single sitting, it requires an ample amount of time to heal - which is known as the process of osseointegration. These implants require a minimum period of three to six months to heal. A dental implant becomes impossible if the process of osseointegration does not happen.

The first process involves preparing the jaws for implantation. The dental implants include a crown and a screw made of titanium material. A pilot hole is drilled into the jaws sites to fix the titanium screws which helps to hold the crown in place. The dentists must possess great expertise and skill to perform this surgical procedure.

The next process involves placement of the dental implant. After the pilot hole is drilled into the jaw, it is slowly widened so that the implant screw can be placed. The gum tissues are then secured over the dental implant. The site is left to heal by placing a protective cover screw on top of the implant screw. After a period of six months, the implant is uncovered and the tooth-like attachment is fixed to the implant screw along with a temporary crown. Finally, it is replaced with a permanent crown.

It is quite essential to care for dental implants as the recovery process depends on oral hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing can prevent infections and failure of implants.
