The heart is a massively important organ that lies at the center of our cultural imagination. After all, it’s not for nothing that we “take heart” when feeling inspired and “break our hearts” when spurned in love. People have long sensed that the heart was essential to human functioning, and modern science has proven them right.

Unfortunately, heart disease is the lead cause of death in many countries, with a number of different conditions having serious adverse effects. Here are just six of the many heart conditions that you should be aware of.

Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS)

This disease is characterized by an increased heart rate that normally occurs after sitting up or standing. It is often accompanied by spells of dizziness that sometimes culminate in fainting. If you notice these symptoms, look into PoTs syndrome treatment. Beta blockers and even antidepressants have proven effective as well.

Coronary Heart Disease

Perhaps the most common heart condition, this disease involves the blockage of the heart’s blood vessels, which are also called arteries. The disease can cause an angina, or a sudden pain in the chest, arm, neck, or jaw that’s caused by a blocked artery. A heart attack is often the tragic final result of this condition.

Arrhythmia

This illness presents itself as an irregular heartbeat. In a healthy person, electrical signals help keep the heart beating at a steady rhythm. Disruptions in those signals can cause the heart to beat faster or slower than it should.

Valve Disease

The cardiovascular system includes internal valves that regulate the flow of blood to the heart. When those valves are sick, your heart is forced to work harder than it should. This can cause fatigue, chest pain, dizziness, and other symptoms.

High Blood Pressure Can Affect Your Heart

Also known as hypertension, this common problem puts you at greater risk of other heart conditions like coronary heart disease and stroke. It is best treated by lifestyle changes and medication.

Congenital Heart Disease

This catch-all term refers to a number of conditions that can affect a person from birth. Often caused by abnormalities or defects that develop in the womb, this disease's treatment and outlook will vary depending on the unique circumstances of each individual case.

While you can’t always avoid these unfortunate conditions, you can live a healthy lifestyle to minimize risk. These heart diseases differ in their causes, symptoms, and treatments, but they all attack that vital organ that beats along in our chests.
