8 Cleaning Tips For Allergy Sufferers

When the time to clean the house comes, it’s allergy season! Namely, all that dusting, spraying, and vacuuming creates huge clouds of imperceptible dust that contain tiny spores inside them.

If you or other family members have an allergy, then it’s worthwhile reading the following eight tips on how to clean a home without aggravating your health.

Leaving laundry outside isn’t a good idea

Air-drying is the most natural method possible for laundry to dry. However, clothing left outside is exposed to mold and pollen spores. Once you bring the clothes inside and put them on, you inhale these tiny spores.

The alternative to air-drying is a clothes dryer. It might be expensive but a dryer will ensure you won’t sneeze immediately after you put on your favorite shirt. If you lack the money, at least shake the laundry a bit before bringing it inside the house.

Facemasks should be mandatory

The World Health Organization recommends wearing facemasks on certain occasions to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. However, facemasks are useful in fighting off allergies as well.

Wearing a mask while you clean should be pretty much mandatory. Also, once you’re done cleaning, it would be wise to leave the premises for a couple of hours, as the finest dust particles finally settle.

A bathroom without mold

The worst thing that can happen to your health is the appearance of mold in the bathroom. The “water room” has the ideal conditions for mold and mildew to thrive. First, the air inside the bathroom is humid and secondly, modern bathrooms are often poorly ventilated.

Since many people have problems with mold allergies, it is recommended to air the bathroom as often as possible. If there isn’t a window in your bathroom, then invest in a solid ventilation system. Finally, the moment you spot mold, remove it right away by scrubbing the tile grout, as it spreads fast!

Professionals on the job

When we speak of professionals, you can ask for house cleaning quotes to get others to do the cleaning for you. This way, you won’t expose yourself to dust and other allergens.

House cleaners don’t charge as much as you think but if you hire these professionals, you won’t have to see medical professionals, namely, allergists.

As a bonus, you’ll save a lot of time since cleaning services are detailed. Some cleaners will even offer to clean the ceiling fan and the inside of the oven.

Soak the cleaning cloth

When you mop the floors, the mop is wet, isn’t it? Water traps allergens, so they are not launched into the air for you to inhale. Adopt the practice of wet wiping everything, not only mopping the floors. This way, fewer dust particles will get scattered around the house.

Avoid shampooing carpets

When you notice a stain on your pristine white carpet, you feel compelled to shampoo it right away. However, this course of action is wrong, as it’s hard for thick carpets to dry quickly. Unless thoroughly aired, mold and dust mites “invade” your carpet and become a hotspot for allergies inside your home.

It is far wiser to have a carpet cleaning service take away the carpet for deep cleaning and return it fully dried. Also, avoid placing mats and rugs inside the bathroom or the kitchen, except anti-slip mats that are made from durable rubber.

Don’t forget to clean the outside the house

Cleaning the outside of your home is just as important as cleaning the inside of your home. Entryways and the driveway are often neglected but mold finds breeding ground in tufts growing between concrete slabs. The fastest and most effective way to clean these surfaces is by using a pressure washer.

Of course, you can always pressure-wash the exterior of your home, so sweeping the pathways is often more than enough. However, working with a broom will create clouds of dust, so spray some water on the ground before sweeping it.

Share cleaning tasks among family members

The final tip we can give you in regard to cleaning the home is to share the chores with other family members. If you have an allergy, then your children, parents, or spouse can take on cleaning tasks that are the riskiest, such as dusting, vacuuming, and/or sweeping the floor.

In return, you can perform less risky chores, such as taking out the trash and washing the dishes. It is important that everyone does their part in allergy prevention inside the home.

As you get to know your allergies better, you will be able to better delegate cleaning tasks. It is not considered lazy on your part to outsource cleaning the house to professionals or let family members take over certain allergy-risky chores.
