6 Things To Know When Starting Your Health Journey

Your health is a combination of several factors, including your psychological well being, social involvement, physical wellness and an absence of illness and injury. The status of your health has a significant influence on how you feel about your life. A sense of good, stable personal health can make it easier to deal with, and enjoy, the inevitable highs and lows that come with being human.

The journey toward optimal health is filled with things you can only learn from experience, but there are some crucial concepts that can help you navigate the road with greater ease. Here are several things to note along your journey toward achieving your best bill of health yet.

1. Always Talk to Your Doctor

There are a number of ways to approach improvements when it comes to your health, and not all methods work for everyone. Only your primary care doctor knows what you and your body need to improve your health safely and effectively. Talk to your doctor about any questions you may have, such as, “Is it safe for me to start a vigorous exercise program?” or “What is sucrose and how will it affect my body?”

2. Your Mental and Physical Health are Linked

Though they’re often considered completely different aspects of wellness, there is a direct relationship between your mental and physical health. Your mental health has an impact on your physical health, and it works the other way around, too. Stress can show up physically, as can joy, sadness, anger and fear. When you take care of one aspect of your health, you’re benefiting another, too.

3. The Journey Will Take Time

Optimal health doesn’t happen overnight. Rather, it’s a series of steps, both big and small, that lead to consistent habits. The steps you take toward your best health build a new, healthy lifestyle for yourself, and it takes time for your mind and body to heal and adjust with each stride. Keep your eyes on your wellness goals, and remember that progress is its own goal, too.

4. Progress Is Not Always Linear

Weight gain, illness, injuries or falling off the wagon for longer than you’re comfortable are all relatively inevitable parts of a wellness journey. There may be times when a birthday party or vacation interrupts your healthy diet plans, or a seasonal bug keeps you from hitting the gym for a whole week.

There may also be times where it’s just simply hard to maintain the motivation to make healthier choices. No matter what happens to throw you off course, don’t throw in the towel altogether - just get back up and try again.

5. You’ll Hear Conflicting Information

From fad diets to sensationalized health study headlines, you will find a lot of information out there on your journey, and not all of it will be accurate or beneficial for your own wellness. As a rule, any typical health journey incorporates consistent, moderate aerobic exercise, a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods from a variety of food groups, an emphasis on restful sleep and a practice or two to better support your mental health

Though it may appear as though an article or new finding you read online is a piece of revolutionary science, things are not always what they seem, especially if they deviate from recommended practices. Talk with your doctor and listen to your body before trying a new or trendy health craze.

6. It’s Important to Be Patient with Yourself

Your health journey is about becoming the best version of you that you can be, and the only way you can do that is if you treat yourself with care. Good things take time, and you deserve a pat on the back for even starting your journey in the first place. Remember why you started and where you’re going, and take a moment every now and then to take an inventory of your progress. Every step in the right direction is a reason to celebrate.
