Although POTS is a fairly common illness, it often goes undiagnosed. That's because POTS, which stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, often has symptoms that can be caused by a number of issues. Therefore, if you've been fighting some of the following symptoms for a long time and can't find a root cause, then it might be a good idea to talk to your doctor about POTS.
Headaches Could Point to POTS
Fighting chronic headaches can make life quite miserable. While headaches can have a variety of causes, from an imbalanced diet to a lack of sleep, POTS is a common cause of unexplained headaches, especially for women. Since most of your body's blood stays in the lower part of your body when you stand up, the lack of blood in your brain and your sudden drop in blood pressure can lead to sudden, severe headaches.
Heart Palpitations Could Point to POTS
When your body senses an imbalance in blood volumes when you stand up, your heart kicks into high gear to try and regain the balance. In some cases, your heart may beat up to 30 times more each minute until your body regains equilibrium. Given this extra workload, it is easy to see why heart palpitations are a common reason why people seek POTS syndrome treatment.
Nausea Could Point to POTS
Feelings of nauseousness can turn your day upside down. Unfortunately, nausea is one of the most common symptoms of POTS due to the sudden drop in blood pressure that occurs when you stand up. To be sure, nausea can have a number of different causes, meaning that you need to track your nausea to see when it occurs. If you notice a pattern of nausea after standing up, you can be fairly certain that you have a problem with POTS.
Chest Pain Could Point to POTS
Since chest pain can be a symptom of a heart attack, it can be quite scary when your chest begins pounding when you stand up. However, if the chest pain subsides fairly quickly, it's likely that your pain is caused by your overworked heart trying to bring your blood pressure back to normal levels and ensure that your brain has enough blood to survive. However, if the chest pain continues for more than a few minutes, it's important to call 9-1-1 right away.
POTS can cause a variety of symptoms in different individuals. Therefore, it's important to track each symptom closely so that you can present them to your doctor to give you a better chance of an accurate diagnosis. While it might take some time to get a diagnosis, understanding what's behind your symptoms can help you finally find some relief.
