When listening to the various news sources available, you have heard conflicting cancer prevention tips. This is partly because knowledge of cancer and what causes it is still evolving. You should realize, however, that lifestyle choices can promote cancer. If you would like to prevent cancer, simple lifestyle choices and changes can help.

Do Not Use (Or Stop) Using Tobacco

Whether you smoke, dip, chew, or are contemplating such habits, realize tobacco use can promote or cause cancer, and a cancer center can help you break these addictions. Types of cancer caused include lung cancer, mouth cancer and throat cancer. You should also be careful of your environment because researchers have shown secondhand smoke heightens the risk of cancer. An integral piece of cancer prevention is to stop using tobacco or do not begin. You can do this alone or contact a doctor/psychiatrist for help.

Protect Yourself From The Sun

Whether you work outside or are outside for recreation, protect yourself from the sun. Exposure to the sun promotes skin cancer. This does not mean you have to be a hermit and stay inside. There are common sense steps you can take to protect yourself from the sun. These steps include avoiding the midday sun. Also, cover your exposed areas with loose-fitting clothing and/or sunscreen. Cancer prevention also includes avoiding sunlamps and tanning beds.

Avoid Risky Behaviors

Risky behaviors can allow infections, which can increase your risk of cancer. To help avoid cancer, practice safe sex. Drug misuse and sharing needles are also risky and can also lead to liver cancer.

Eat A Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet may reduce your risk of cancer. This includes eating fruits and vegetables, including beans and whole grains. Processed meats can contribute to cancer, so the amount eaten should be limited. This healthy diet also includes avoiding obesity by choosing lighter and leaner foods and limiting refined sugars and animal fats.

Simple lifestyle changes can help avoid cancer. Even with prevention, you need to be regularly screened for various types of cancer. Prevention and these screenings may help you discover your cancer early, and treatment will be more likely to be successful.
