In America, 35 percent of the population is sleep-deprived. While things like diet and exercise can influence the quality of sleep, the answer to a better night’s sleep may be in your bedroom. On top of taking daily steps to improve your sleep, it is important to make sure the setup of your bedroom is as conducive to sleep as possible.

Prioritize Bed Quality

It goes without saying that, in order to sleep well, you need a comfortable and supportive bed. If need be, invest in a good quality mattress and bed frame, particularly if your spine is not aligned properly when resting on your current bed. Make sure you read up on mattress reviews and test out any beds before you choose which one to buy. Meanwhile, go for bedding that is soothing on the skin, preferably made with natural materials and nothing that could cause irritation.

Keep Your Room Clutter-Free

Scientific research has shown the negative impact of clutter on the brain. The awareness of clutter causes the release of the stress hormone cortisol, making it very difficult for the mind to relax. In this way, having clutter in your bedroom will make it very hard for you to switch off and fall asleep. It is therefore particularly important to keep things as clutter-free in your bedroom, making sure the floor and surfaces are as clear as possible. Remove any potential distractions, such as electronic devices, which are likely to keep you more alert and disrupt your sleep in the process.

Choose Sleep-Inducing Colors

Did you know that the colors in your bedroom can impact your sleep? For example, blue has been shown to be the best color for inducing good quality sleep due to its calming effect on the heart rate and mind. Certain shades of yellow, meanwhile, are also good for bringing on sleep. On the other hand, purples, grays and browns are inhibitors of sleep, because they stimulate the mind and lower mood respectively. Of course, it is also important that you choose colors that appeal to you personally and enable you to relax. The important thing is to pay special attention to the colors in your room and opt for ones that are soothing.

Remember The Purpose Of Your Bedroom

Whatever the size and style of your bedroom, remember that it is meant to be a place you associate with rest. Make this a priority when it comes to the way you set up your bedroom. By focusing on keeping things minimal and spacious, as well as choosing calming shades on the walls and in your bedding, you are giving yourself the best chance possible of creating a sleep-inducing environment.
