If you've been to a health food store recently, you've probably seen hundreds of different brands of probiotics. Probiotics are microorganisms that have been shown to have numerous health advantages when consumed regularly.
Here are six ways that probiotics can benefit your overall health.
Balance Your Digestive System with probiotics
Your body consists of both good and bad bacteria. Bad bacteria can increase due to illness, certain medications such as antibiotics and an unhealthy diet. High levels of bad bacteria can cause an imbalance in your gut, which can lead to adverse health effects such as a decreased ability to absorb nutrients from food, mental health disturbances and upset stomach.
However, this is where probiotics come in. Probiotics consist of good bacteria, and they can help balance your digestive system when consumed regularly by combating the bad bacteria that's making you feel sick. Probiotics ensure that there are more good bacteria than bad bacteria in your gut, which can restore the natural balance of your digestive system.
Treat Mental Health Conditions with probiotics
Many studies have found an association between a healthy gut and positive mental health. One study found that individuals who took probiotics for two months saw improvements in mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
However, probiotics can also be beneficial for general mental health, as another study discovered that those who consumed probiotics regularly experienced a decrease in stress and a more positive mood.
If you want to ensure that the probiotics thrive at optimal levels in your gut, consider taking dr gundry prebiothrive supplements. While probiotics consist of good bacteria, prebiotics stimulate growth of this good bacteria. It's necessary that you consume both if you want to reap their full benefits.
Prevent Diarrhea with probiotics
If you've recently taken antibiotics, you may have noticed a change in your bowel habits, such as an onset of diarrhea. This is because antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria, leading to an imbalance in the gut. However, several studies have shown that probiotics can restore the gut's natural state, reducing diarrhea caused by antibiotics by approximately 42 percent and decreasing the duration of diarrhea by about 25 hours.
Lower Cholesterol with probiotics
Another way that probiotics can benefit your health is by lowering cholesterol, therefore allowing your heart to function at its best. Several studies showed that individuals who consumed a probiotic yogurt for up to eight weeks experienced a four percent decrease in cholesterol. As an additional benefit, probiotics have also been shown to slightly reduce blood pressure, which can improve your heart's health.
Reduce Eczema with probiotics
Although more research needs to be conducted to determine a stronger link, preliminary studies have shown a possible association between probiotics and a reduction in eczema. More specifically, one study found that infants with eczema who were given probiotic milk experienced a decrease in eczema, while those who were given normal milk did not.
This association was also found in pregnant women, as those who took probiotics during their pregnancy had children with an 83 percent lower chance of developing eczema by two years old. It hasn't yet been determined if these results apply to adults, but the initial findings are promising.
Lose Weight with probiotics
Probiotics can aid in weight loss by preventing the intestines from absorbing fat and instead excreting it through the feces. Another mechanism by which probiotics aid in weight loss is by keeping you full for a longer period of time by increasing levels of satiety hormones.
One study discovered that women who consumed probiotics for three months lost 50 percent more weight than women who didn't. Although a healthy diet and exercise are the most important factors in losing weight, probiotics can aid in this process.
Consuming a daily probiotic only takes a few seconds out of your day, but it can provide you with many long-term advantages to your digestive health, mental health and much more. Be sure to pick up some probiotics on your next trip to the drugstore if you want to reap these benefits.
