Dental care is important even when traveling, so it is necessary to be prepared for good oral hygiene before travel and during. This includes a toothbrush that is clean and dry.

It may be worth buying a new toothbrush and a good toothpaste just for traveling. You should keep them both available easily during travel and in case of lost luggage - along with mouthwash and dental floss.

Pack toothbrush, toothpaste and floss when traveling

When traveling, the first thing to consider for oral health is to ensure all the right tools are packed safely and readily available. Traveling often takes hours overnight often making it difficult to have ready access to all your belongings. Having a toothbrush and toothpaste in a carry-on bag or purse is helpful.

Teeth still require brushing twice daily, and this is even more important if you are going to be flossing less frequently while traveling. Many places will have travel toothbrushes or even full sets with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash, and travel-safe containers for each of them.

Avoid traveling with open mouthwash where possible. A travel size can be obtained and opened upon arrival, or mouthwash strips may be used with a sip of water to dissolve them and swish around the mouth.

Pack bottled water for oral hygiene routine when traveling

In some locations water is not recommended for drinking. In those locations it is recommended to also use bottled water for brushing teeth. It will provide clean water for tooth brushing without applying water that has additional bacteria in it. Teeth should continue to be brushed twice daily plus flossed regularly even during travel.

When traveling long distances it may not be feasible to brush teeth before bed or first thing in the morning. In these cases you can brush teeth directly after eating, or before boarding your transportation. Teeth can then be brushed again upon arrival, before sleep, or upon waking. It is normal and useful to adjust your dental care schedule to fit the travelling schedule for short periods of time.

The most important things to do when caring for oral hygiene while traveling is to have the proper tools. Carry a waterproof pouch and a breathable cover for the toothbrush so it can still dry out between use, and to brush teeth twice a day even if it requires adapting your brushing schedule to fit around your travel arrangements.
