Green tea has many health benefits when consumed regularly. Research has discovered that these benefits also extend to dental health. By lowering the oral germs levels within the mouth, it encourages healthy teeth and gums which can extend to improvements throughout the body.
Acidity and green tea
One of the benefits of green tea is that it reduces the level of acidity in the saliva. The decreased acidity lowers the formation of cavities, and slows gum disease. It also shows promise in slowing the rate of tooth decay. A study based in Egypt showed that rinsing the teeth for five minutes with green tea slowed gum bleeding.
Choosing to end a meal with green tea can reduce cavities and gum disease, or even rinse the mouth after meals. Increased consumption of green tea will also increase the caffeine in the body so should be limited to a cup or two each day.
Anti-inflammation and green tea
With its anti-inflammatory abilities green tea also reduces inflammation in the gums and can improve periodontal disease while boosting the health of the gums. With reduced swelling and inflammation gums are less irritated, have less bleeding and are healthier.
This can be achieved through chewing gum or a candy with green tea extracts after each meal. These improvements to dental health are also likely to lead to fewer lost teeth and tooth extractions.
Antioxidants and green tea
The increased antioxidants that green tea adds to the mouth may be able to slow oral cancer and even reduce the occurrence rates. Using a green tea extract in mints or gum after each meal can increase the protection of the cells from cancers.
When used by those with precancerous lesions it slowed the progress of oral cancer and inhibited the growth of oral cancers.
Microbe reduction and green tea
By decreasing the acidity and the germs in the mouth, there is an added benefit of reducing the microbes within the mouth. By killing the germs and microbes that cause bad breath to occur, not only is there a lower risk of tooth decay but also a lower risk of the bad breath that occurs when dental problems arise.
Green tea benefits can be enjoyed in many ways. It is achieved through drinking a cup or two of green tea each day, which will also contain enough caffeine to replace a coffee habit, or through other means.
Hard candies can be found that are sugar free and can be enjoyed after each meal, or dental care products that contain green tea and its extracts such as toothpaste and mouthwash.
These items are often found in healthfood stores and some grocery stores. Regular use can improve all aspects of dental health from lowering tooth decay, decreasing signs of gum disease such as bleeding and inflammation of the gums, while also slowing the progress and growth of oral cancer.
