4 Dental Hygiene Tools To Consider For Enhanced Oral Health

Toothbrushes are a well-known necessity for oral hygiene, but some general dentistry tools can also be used at home. While flossing and brushing teeth are essential for tooth care, other tools can also help create a beautiful, healthy smile.

 

Dental Picks

Dental picks are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased in many convenient stores. This dental tool consists of a stainless steel strip that is approximately the same thickness as regular dental floss. One of the benefits to using a dental pick is that it’s reusable. Unlike floss, a dental pick can be washed and used regularly every evening. By sliding the strip between teeth, a dental pick can effectively remove food and plaque buildup.

Oral Irrigator

An oral irrigator is another alternative to flossing. This type of tool works well for those who have braces or retainers that may make thread flossing difficult. An oral irrigator - also known as a “dental water jet” - uses a pressurized water stream to successfully clean between teeth. Unlike the dental pick, oral irrigators are especially useful for people with sensitive gums. Oral irrigators can reduce the amount of bacteria that can cause gum disease and removes more plaque than a toothbrush.

Mouthwash

There are a variety of different mouthwashes available on the market today. Therapeutic mouthwash is available over the counter and by prescription depending on the strength needed. For those with gum disease or tooth decay, certain mouthwashes may be recommended over others. By using mouthwash, the risk for developing gingivitis and plaque buildup is greatly diminished. Although children under six are not advised to use mouthwash, it is perfectly safe for older children and adults.

Tongue Scraper

A tongue scraper can remove extra germs that can cause bad breath and bacteria. By using a tongue scraper, taste can be greatly improved. Using a tongue scraper twice a day can help someone better distinguish between bitter and sweet sensations. By removing excess bacteria, the risk for dental decay is also reduced. Although tongue scrapers work well for a number of different uses, it must be used regularly. Like brushing and flossing, tongue scraping after breakfast and before bed is often recommended.

Oral care is an extremely important part of living a healthy life. To keep teeth white, fight bad breath and prevent cavities and other potentially painful issues pertaining to the mouth, practicing good hygiene is imperative.
