There’s no denying it. More and more people are suffering from anxiety on a regular basis. No matter why you’re suffering, here are some tips to help you decrease your anxiety. 

Talk to an Expert

Depending on the cause of your anxiety, it can always help to talk to an expert. It can be challenging to develop a relationship with a therapist and find someone you trust though. Don’t be afraid to put in the work. The growth and relief you’ll feel after working with a therapist can have a significant impact on getting your anxiety under control. 

Depending on the underlying reason why you suffer from anxiety, it may be beneficial to listen to an expert in that field of medicine, even if you don’t visit them for therapy. For instance, did you know that about half of those who have ADHD also suffer from anxiety and depression?

Listening to an expert like psychiatrist Dr. Ned Hallowell talk about ADHD and its relation to anxiety may be of great benefit for those suffering from both. 

Watch What You Eat

If you find yourself suffering from anxiety or panic attacks, take a look at your diet. Don’t skip meals and make sure your diet is balanced. Processed foods, foods high in sugar and high fat dairy products are all linked to anxiety.

Depending on how you deal with stress, it can be easy to overeat or skip meals. Try and think of food as the fuel that makes your body work. This will help you focus on giving your body what it needs versus what you want in the moment. Eating right can help with those feelings of racing heart and upset stomach as well. 

Watch What You Drink

On the same token, be careful how much alcohol and caffeine you’re drinking. Alcohol may seem like a good way to escape your troubles, but chronic use can lead to increased feelings of anxiety. This is especially true when you’re waking up in the morning after drinking a lot the night before.

Likewise, caffeine may seem like a good way to have the energy to get through your day if your anxiety is keeping you up at night, but it can also cause your heart to feel like it’s racing and make you feel jittery.

Instead, reach for some water. Hydrating well will make your body run better, a lot like eating the right foods. A study was even done that showed there’s a link between not drinking enough water and anxiety and depression. Though scientists aren’t sure why the two correlate, water helps keep your body in balance, so the correlation makes sense. 

Get Enough Sleep

You probably already know that you need to get enough sleep, and if anxious thoughts are keeping you up at night, then it can be challenging to do so. But in truth, chronic undersleep can have a visceral impact on anxiety.

If you’re trapped in a circle where you constantly stay up late looking at your phone and your television because you know you won’t be able to fall asleep, try taking on some intentional habits to help yourself sleep. 

These habits could include drinking herbal tea or another calming beverage close to bedtime. Stay away from blue light devices late in the night as well. Try CBD before you go to sleep. Finally, steer your mind from anxious thoughts. 

Practice Meditation

Training your mind away from negative thoughts may seem near impossible. Meditation and breathing exercises can help. They require you to put in work in order to get good at them.  

It takes conscious effort to keep your brain off of anxious thoughts. You have to train yourself to do it. This is challenging, but if you put in the work, it could have a significant relief on your anxiety and make it easier to sleep.  

Anxiety may seem like a daunting mountain to climb, but you can fight it, even without medication. You have to put in the work. Believe in yourself.
