Maintaining dental health is a priority for all of us. Keeping our teeth and gums in good condition has wide-ranging benefits, among them:

Self-esteem. A healthy smile looks good and helps us present ourselves in the best way possible. An essential part of looking good is clean, white teeth.

Lowered risk of disease. Healthy gums and teeth feel good, too. But with gum disease comes an increased risk of other health problems, among them stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

Fresh breath another self-esteem essential

Less chance of tooth decay, hopefully leading to less requirement for dental treatment

Keeping Your Teeth And Gums Healthy

We all know the basic drill here or we should, at least. Brushing your teeth regularly - twice a day is recommended - is of course one of the most important habits for dental health, but there are other things you can do in addition to make sure your teeth and gums are in tip-top condition:

Flossing. This is important since it removes any little bits of food that get stuck between the teeth, in places that your toothbrush cant quite read. Flossing can also help get rid of any plaque on the line of the gum too, which may help further protect against gum disease.

Regular check-ups. Seeing your dentist means that if there's anything wrong it will get spotted and fixed as soon as possible. One thing about dental problems like decay is that the longer they're left, the worse they get requiring more treatment. So regular check-ups help keep treatment to a minimum.

Avoiding fizzy drinks and sugary snacks. Sugar causes your mouth to become acidic due to the bacteria reacting with the sugar, and this is what causes decay.

Eating a diet that's optimized for oral health. Cheese after a meal can have a neutralizing effect on the acids that cause decay. Its also a good source of calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Chicken and various types of nuts are also widely recommended since their nutrients include things like phosphorus and calcium which are important mineral nutrients for the teeth.

Making It All Affordable

Unfortunately, its impossible to know when were likely to need restorative or emergency dental work, no matter how healthy living and oral-hygiene conscientious we are. One way of lowering the cost of dental care is to purchase dental insurance this may also include dental accidents and emergencies that occur when you're overseas, too.

Dental coverage is also inexpensive and given the cost of even fairly ordinary restorative treatments such as fillings and crowns, it can take the sting out of dental bills.

Oral Health Is Largely A Habit

Having healthy teeth and gums doesn't require great effort by any means. But acquiring the habits of oral health can really make a difference to overall wellbeing, from increased confidence to reduced risk of disease.

And these days, there are even apps available to help you in your mission to have the healthiest teeth and gums possible. You can also get some pretty high-tech electric toothbrush models that adjust their speed and cleaning action automatically, as well as indicating how long you should be spending on each part of your mouth.

So, while oral health is largely a habit it should never feel like a chore.
