How Do You Clean Teeth With A Miswak Stick?

In many Middle Eastern and African countries, a special teeth-cleaning twig called a miswak stick is very popular. It starts off as just an ordinary tree stick but you have to chew on it to reveal what’s beneath the bark.

With a little more chewing, you reveal the center of the twig. After a few minutes, it creates soft bristles that will resemble a brush. Once it’s ready, you dip it in water and begin cleaning your teeth. It’s used much like any regular toothbrush though every few days you’ll want to cut off old bristles and make way for new ones.

Toothbrushes as we know them are made of plastic which wind up in landfills. With a miswak stick, it’s a natural teeth-cleaning tool that you won’t feel as guilty about throwing away when it’s time to replace it.

Some say the miswak stick is even better than using the kind of toothbrush you’re used to. While that debate rages on though, here are some benefits of using a miswak stick.

Fights tooth decay and cavities

The miswak stick helps you create more saliva which helps move bacteria in your mouth along rather than letting it settle on your teeth. It also naturally contains sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and calcium oxide. These help keep tooth enamel strong without the use of chemically-created toothpastes.

Controls bacteria

Like your gut, your mouth is home to an array of bacteria, some of it beneficial and others of it harmful. Miswak sticks have a natural antibacterial component that helps keep things under control, leading to fewer dental issues.

Stops plaque buildup

When plaque builds up, it’s only a matter of time before it becomes tartar. You can remove it with a regular toothbrush but only a miswak stick has antibacterial properties that can further aid you in banishing plaque.

Prevents stains

If you enjoy coffee, tea, red wine, or other foods and drinks known to stain teeth, a miswak stick can help. It is very effective at removing buildup that leaves teeth looking yellow to give you a brighter smile.

Better breath

Who doesn’t want fresher breath? There’s nothing worse than coming into contact with someone with bad breath, that is, until you realize it’s you! The bad bacteria in your mouth is what causes the kind of breath that can bowl someone over. Since the miswak stick keeps bad bacteria under control, it will help minimize mouth odor.

Healthy gums

Try using a miswak stick if you’ve had light gum troubles in the past. Because of those antibacterial properties, it can help you prevent gingivitis. Preventing gingivitis is key because it can progress into gum disease.

If you’re intrigued, give the miswak stick a try and see how you like it!
