Have you ever heard of keratosis pilaris? Many people haven’t, but it is a skin condition that many people suffer with. The reason why many people don’t know what it is, however, is because those with it are often too ashamed to show it or talk about.

Essentially, keratosis pilaris is known as “chicken skin” because it appears on the skin as rough bumps. The bumps can become irritating as well as embarrassing, but they are formed when dead skin cells plug up your hair follicles.

They are most often apparent in the areas of the arms, thighs, cheeks, and buttocks. While there is no cure for this condition, and while this condition doesn’t have any negative side effects, there are ways that you can reduce the appearance of chicken skin so that you can live your life shame-free, though you shouldn’t be ashamed of them in the first place.

Symptoms Of Keratosis Pilaris

If you are worried that you may have this skin condition, there are some symptoms that can help you to identify if that is the case. There are some symptoms that overlap with other conditions, so keep that in mind as you go through them. Below is a list of the symptoms that you may experience with keratosis pilaris:

  • Bumps on the skin
  • Redness around bumps
  • Itchy or irritated skin
  • Dry skin
  • Different colored bumps

How To Get Rid Of Keratosis Pilaris

While there is no cure for this skin condition, there are ways that you can reduce the appearance of it so that you can avoid embarrassment all together. Below are some of the ways that you can rid yourself of this irritating skin condition:

  • Dermatology Treatments: If your condition is severe enough, you can seek out professional treatment such as microdermabrasion, retinol creams, or even chemical peels.
  • Soak In Baths: One of the at-home remedies that you can use to reduce the appearance of this condition is to soak in a warm bath. By soaking in warm water, you are allowing your pores to loosen and open up which will allow those dead skin cells to escape a bit more.
  • Use Exfoliating Products: On top of soaking in warm water, you can also use exfoliation. By using exfoliation, you are scrubbing away all of those dead skin cells that lie on the top layer of your skin.
  • Apply Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is used for a variety of purposes, one of which is to reduce inflammation. Because your skin is irritated with keratosis pilaris, applying coconut oil can help to sooth your irritated skin.

Overall, if you suffer from the skin condition known as keratosis pilaris, there are some ways that you can treat it and reduce the appearance. However, there is no cure to completely rid yourself of it. With that in mind, you should not be ashamed of your condition; instead, you should just do all that you can to help yourself feel confident and comfortable in your skin.
