Fluoride is often added to water and can be found in toothpastes. While it is considered by some to be safe for use in small amounts, it can be dangerous in high doses and should not be used be used excessively. Dangers of fluoride overexposure include fluorosis, and can lead to weakened bones, weakened ligaments, pain from bones and muscles, and damage to the nervous system.

Toothpaste and fluoride

High doses of fluoride can be unsafe for young children. The risk in over-fluoridation in children often results in discolored adult teeth. Its use before the adult teeth are present can also lead to the adult teeth being altered in color. Toothpaste created for children will not contain fluoride, as swallowing the toothpaste can be harmful if it is a regular occurrence.

Bone fluorosis and fluoride

In adults the highest risk is fluorosis of the bones and skeleton. High levels of fluoride can cause the bones to weaken, and can lead to the loss of strength in muscles and ligaments, causing pain and even difficulty walking if left untreated.

Health concerns and fluoride

Other concerns include interrupting the work of the thyroid, acne concerns, and even cardiovascular concerns in some. These are less likely than the others, but still at risk of occurring, along with blood pressure issues, effects on the reproductive system, and even osteoarthritis.

Another risk is neurological concerns including ADHD. Fluoride in large doses is unable to be metabolized quickly and absorbs calcium found in the body. The lowered levels of calcium in the bones and the muscles cause them to weaken and bones are at higher risk for fractures and breaks. A calcium supplement can be used to counteract some of these long-term effects but is not a cure.

Fluoride in excessive amounts can lead to health concerns, and the risk increases if over exposure continues for an extended time. Young children should not use fluoride until their adult teeth have formed and broken through the gums, as they may become discolored. Though it is a safe and naturally occurring nutrient that is already present in the human body, there are risks associated with high levels of fluoride.
