Skin Problems? Blue Light Therapy Might Help

Do you have acne or sunspots? If so, you’ve likely tried your share of skin creams and may have even paid a visit to your dermatologist to see what can be done. For those not seeing results from more common treatments, it might be helpful to look into blue light therapy.

This light treatment is painless, treating only the areas it can reach. It’s best for conditions on the surface of skin or even just beneath it. Blue light therapy is often used to treat sun damage or skin cancer growths. It’s also ideal for helping with acne and skincare concerns.

For acne, it can help improve the texture of the skin while also reducing the size of enlarged oil glands. Sunspots and scars that were caused by acne seem to fade away with blue light therapy treatment. This outpatient procedure is very easy to endure and is very low risk.

Sometimes, special medication is used in the procedure which can leave your skin more sensitive to sunlight. You’ll wear goggles during this treatment which takes 15 to 90 minutes, depending on which parts of your body are being treated. Smaller areas will take a short amount of time, something you could even have done on your lunch break!

Dermatologist Follow-Ups

With blue light therapy, it’s important to know that it’s not a one-and-done deal. You’ll need to visit your dermatologist for follow-up treatments. For sunspots, it’s usually around four treatments plus a visit once a year after that. If you’re treating acne with blue light therapy, you’ll likely have four to six treatments and need to maintain it every six months from there.

There are blue light therapy devices you can use in your own home. Confirmed studies found that they can be effective for acne treatment, though your best results will most likely come from having them done professionally.

Regardless of where you have blue light therapy performed – either by your own hand at home or from a professional, in-office treatment – you may have swollen, red, and tender skin. It could also bruise slightly or blister, most common when medications have been applied prior to the therapy. Crusting and peeling is very normal afterward and your skin will clear up within three to 14 days. Most people report healing within a week.

Have you tried it all to get rid of acne or sunspots? You may find the answer with blue light therapy. It’s non-invasive and completely painless. Some say it’s relaxing too and the side effects are rather minimal. It could be worth trying if you can’t get your skin clear and smooth with the products and methods you’re currently using so ask your dermatologist!
