Part of regular preventative maintenance and tooth care is a teeth cleaning at the dental office. These are usually done once or twice a year and remove all the build-up and plaque on the teeth and from around the gums, allowing for a fresh start to avoid cavities.

A professional teeth cleaning is usually performed by a dental hygienist, and also consists of an inspection and detailed exam of your teeth, catching any cavities when they are small or in some cases before they break through.

By catching any issues or concerns early, treatment can be started sooner and small problems are less likely to become big ones, saving both money and time spent at the dentist for fillings and further treatments.

Professional Teeth Cleaning Removes Food And Plaque Build-Up

Every day as we eat and drink, food particles and residue coats the teeth and leaves build-up and bits of food around the gums. As these rest against the teeth and gums they can cause deterioration of the enamel and weaken the teeth as well as lead to discolouration and staining.

To avoid build-up and residue it is necessary to rinse the mouth and teeth after eating, to drink water more then any other drink, and brush and floss daily. However, this may still allow some plaque and residue to build up and it is important to have a professional cleaning.

Professional Teeth Cleaning Spots Cavities And Other Problems

The advantages of a professional dental cleaning include getting a good look at all the teeth to view where build-up has begun and where anything has been missed. The teeth are cleaned with traditional metal tools and high-pressure water to remove all food debris, plaque and tartar build-up. Then they are flossed.

Following the cleaning a dentist will do a check of the teeth and explain any concerns they find as well as how to treat them. If any cavities are found, they are filled on a follow-up appointment.

Dental cleanings are an important part of maintaining oral health and help to keep teeth healthy and possibly prevent further treatments. Having them can hopefully stave off cavities, infections, and tooth damage, reducing the need for fillings, root canals, and even extractions.
