Why Flossing Is Important

Teeth flossing is accomplished by using a dental floss to remove the food and bacteria build-up from around the teeth, between the teeth, and along the gums. This should be done twice a day, and in such a way that the floss does not just pass between the teeth but also hug around each tooth and against the gums to prevent build-up between the teeth and the gums.

There is some discussion over whether or not a water pick is a suitable replacement or should be used in addition to regular flossing so checking with your regular dentist is the best place to start.

Regular Flossing

Flossing will reach hard to remove particles that brushing does not remove. It can fit in the spaces between teeth that a toothbrush just can’t reach and will get closer to the gums than some tooth brushes.

Healthy gums require regular flossing, and while there may be some slight bleeding as you begin a regular flossing routine, it is a sign that gums have build-up near them. It should stop after a few days, and continued appearance of blood after or during flossing should be reported to the dentist who may recommend a deep cleaning process to help heal the gums.

Flossing Options

If it is difficult to hold the floss or the hands are unable to comfortably reach all areas there are a few options. The main toothpaste and dental floss companies offer other methods such as a handle that stretches floss between two plastic or wooden pieces. This allows the user to hold the handle only while the floss is stretched properly and can be used to clean between teeth.

These cannot curve the floss around the tooth as it can when done by hand, but it is a much better option then simply not flossing and can make the process easy and fast.

Flossing the teeth removes 30 to 40 percent off all the build-up on teeth and is as important as brushing. It reaches areas that a toothbrush cannot and removes harder plaque than the toothbrush that removes only regular food and bacteria from the surface of the tooth. Flossing is instrumental in maintaining healthy gums, and there are a few options to make it easier for those who struggle.
