Experiencing a dental emergency while traveling is never a desirable situation. Nonetheless, it happens, and you should be prepared to handle any issues if they occur. These methods will help you properly handle a dental emergency when you are out of town or away from your regular dentist.

Check With Your Insurance

If you have dental insurance, you can check with them to see what providers in the area are in-network. Most dental insurance providers have online directories so it can be as simple as conducting a quick Internet search. Seeing a provider who takes your insurance can save you significant costs, especially if you are to be charged a fee to be seen on emergency. When you call to see if you can get in, be sure to confirm whether an office takes your insurance as well.

Call To Explain Your Situation

Next, you should begin calling a few dentist practices or oral surgeons near where you are, explain your situation and see if they can help you. Many clinics offer same day dental appointments to see patients on emergency so you can come in and get your issue taken care of quickly. This is especially important if you are in severe pain or if time is of the essence for repairing damage, such as if a tooth has fallen out.

Care For Your Teeth In The Interim

Waiting to go to an emergency dentist appointment can be agonizing, but there are some things you can do to take care of yourself and your teeth while you wait. If your tooth has completely fallen out, for example, place it in milk or back in its socket to keep it moist. Dentists can usually reaffix it successfully within an hour or so. Keeping the mouth clean can help prevent teeth and gum infections from occurring if a tooth is cracked, aching or you have suffered cuts to your gums.

Go To The Emergency Room

Some dental emergencies are also medical emergencies and need to be treated as such. Any injury that involves jaw fractures, head trauma, serious cuts to the mouth or similar medical issues needs to be seen in an urgent care facility or emergency room. Dentists are not equipped to handle these types of emergencies. Even a severe abscess or infection may be something you shouldn't wait around for a dentist to see. See to any potentially life-threatening situations before worrying about anything else.

If you experience a dental emergency while away from your regular dentist, don't panic. There are services that can help you no matter where you are. Handling the situation calmly and rationally will increase the likelihood of getting the help you need quickly.
