6 Guidelines For Cleaning Areas Of Your House You May Be Forgetting

While certain areas of your home are obvious spots to clean, such as your bathroom and kitchen, others aren't so evident and are therefore easy to overlook. Here are six things in your home that you're probably forgetting to clean.

Doorknobs and Handles

Doorknobs, handles and staircase handrails are probably one of the most commonly-touched areas in your home, making them a breeding ground for germs and pathogens. Not to mention, many strangers entering or leaving your home have likely touched these areas as well.

To clean wooden doorknobs or handles, add a small amount of dish soap to a bowl of warm water and use a gentle sponge to scrub the area. You can also use a combination of warm water, vinegar and flour to remove tarnish and add shine.

Rugs

Rugs are prone to collecting dust mites, pet hair and dead skin cells, which can exacerbate allergies and asthma. However, there's an easy fix for this. Regularly cleaning your rug can remove dirt and allergens and make it look as good as new.

You can clean your rug by hand using dish soap and a scrub brush, or you can let an expert handle it by scheduling a rug cleaning. Whichever method you choose, be sure to remove any clutter and obstructing furniture beforehand.

Toothbrush Holders

If you think about where your toothbrush holder is located, you'll understand why it's important to clean it regularly. Your toothbrush holder can easily pick up disease-causing germs that are lurking in your bathroom, such as E. coli. Therefore, toss it in the dishwasher once or twice a week or clean it by hand using hot water and soap.

On a similar note, keep your toothbrush clean by boiling it in hot water. This is especially important in the winter when illnesses such as the flu run rampant.

Electronic Devices

Our hands have natural oils and food residues that are regularly deposited onto keyboards, mousepads and laptop keys. Think about how many times you've eaten a meal while working at your desk or sneezed right near your laptop.

To clean your electronic devices, use a disinfecting wipe to eliminate germs. Be sure to wait a few minutes before using your laptop to allow the chemicals to work their magic. If you have a computer with a removable mouse or keyboard, you can detach them and gently scrub them with a solution of soap and warm water.

Place Mats

Using place mats is an effective way to protect your dining table from food or liquid stains. However, this means that your place mats are soiled with various stains and debris. To clean plastic or vinyl place mats, use a damp cloth to wipe them down or run them under warm water and leave them to dry overnight.

If you have fabric place mats, you can simply throw them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Be sure to refrain from using water to wash bamboo place mats, as it can warp and discolor the material. Instead, lightly scrub the place mats with a solution of water and white vinegar.

Oven

When you cook food in the oven, residue and grease often falls to the bottom, increasing the risk of fire and smoke inhalation. Additionally, oven buildup can also result in longer cooking times and undercooked foods. Therefore, depending on how often you use your oven, you should aim to clean it every three to six months.

The easiest way to tackle this chore is to use the self-cleaning feature, which uses extremely high temperatures to decompose food residue in about three hours. If your oven doesn't have a self-cleaning feature or you'd rather do the job manually, you can sprinkle the inside of your oven with baking powder and then spray it with a mixture of water and vinegar. Let it sit overnight, and then scrub it away in the morning to reveal a sparkling oven.

Cleaning overlooked areas of your home is essential to maintaining its purity and also protecting you and your family's health. Follow these six tips for guidance on how to clean commonly-forgotten areas in your home.
