The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time to start anything new and challenging. It is like a fresh start for many people. It also happens to come after numerous holidays during which you may have indulged in many different foods and maybe overdone it.
If losing weight in the new year is something that you are serious about or considering, continue reading for five ways to do so.
Increase Your Proteins
If you pay attention to what foods and habits caused you to gain weight, it is most likely foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt, and low in actual protein. Your body uses protein for fuel and energy and in order to actually feel full. Protein helps you burn calories and fat and increase your metabolism.

Increase Your Cardio
You may have a job that requires a lot of walking and moving around. You may even be exhausted after work because of this. But the truth is, the only type of exercise that truly gets your blood flowing is the kind of movement that increases your heart rate.
It can be difficult to get started on cardio exercises, but once you do, you will find that you have more energy.
Is there an activity that you used to enjoy doing or that you would like to start trying? Things like bicycling, swimming, jogging, running, dancing, or group boot camp workouts are a great place to start. Remember that cardio exercise is a great way to burn fat off of your body and it is great for your heart. Be sure to start off slowly and increase as you get comfortable.
Increase Your Fasting
Have you heard of intermittent fasting before? It has been around for a while but is recently becoming more talked about. The cool thing is that there are different types of fasting that you can try and each kind gives different benefits. They each provide a period of time where you are not eating food and a specific period of time that you do consume food.
Some different types of intermittent fasting are:
- On the 5:2 method, you eat normally for five days out of the week, and then for two days of the week, you cut your calories down to 500 or 600 a day.
- Time-restricted fasting means that you only eat during certain time frames in the day. For example, 16:8 entails only eating during an eight-hour period during the day and fasting for the other 16 hours.
- Overnight fasting is basically fasting for 12 hours a day. For example, you stop eating at seven p.m. and do not eat again until seven a.m. the next day.
- Whole day fasting involves going a whole 24-hour period without eating once or twice a week.
Increase Your Juices
Juicing is a way that many people prefer to clear out or detox their bodies. You can find different recipes for high-fiber juices to drink throughout your day and you can even purchase pre-made juices. You may even choose to alternate days where you juice and then eat small balanced meals the next day or week.
Increase Your Weights
Cardio exercise is not the only way to exercise. If you are looking to lose weight rather quickly, it is wise to strengthen the muscles in your body. The cool thing about weightlifting is a session does not have to be an hour-long in order to be beneficial.
You can try circuit training wherein you challenge different parts of your body in one day. Or you may choose to focus on one body part today and a different body part tomorrow. You may choose to start off using your body weight to do push-ups, curl-ups, and sit-ups. Then you can increase the intensity by adding dumbbells and resistance bands.
