Getting your hormone levels checked is one of the best things that you can do for your health. Testing can determine if certain hormone levels are too high or too low, which might explain why you’re experiencing certain abnormalities with your body. Here are four main reasons why you should get your hormones checked.

Thyroid Problem Detection

Your thyroid is responsible for making certain hormones that regulate many of your body’s processes, and a hormone test can determine if your thyroid is producing too much or too little of a certain hormone. As MSN.com explains, imbalances in your thyroid hormones could be contributing to feelings of fatigue or unusual swelling that you might be experiencing. Thyroid hormone problems could also contribute to hair loss and digestive problems. Even your heart rate and rhythm could be affected by thyroid abnormalities.

Disease Diagnosis

A hormone test is often useful for diagnosing certain diseases. Dehydroepiandrosterone, or DHEA, is an adrenal gland hormone that is often linked to diabetes, lupus and other diseases when levels of this hormone are too low. Testing levels of the hormone erythropoietin, or EPO, can help doctors diagnose conditions, such as anemia, bone marrow disorders and kidney tumors.

Sexual Irregularity Treatment

Getting a hormone test will make it easier for you to get the appropriate treatment for any irregularities in your sexual functioning that you might be experiencing. Hormone imbalances are sometimes the cause for erectile dysfunction and libido in men, and low testosterone medication can often treat these problems. Women may experience irregularity in their menstrual cycles because of a hormone problem. Hormone testing can even help you determine if a hormone problem is affecting your ability to conceive children.

Explanation for Mental and Emotional Health Problems

If you’re feeling unusually depressed, anxious or bothered in some other way over your mental or emotional health, a hormone imbalance may be to blame. Men who have low testosterone often experience irritability while low estrogen sometimes causes women to have mood swings. Hormone imbalances can also worsen the effects of existing conditions, such as bipolar disorder and clinical depression, and the results of a hormone test can be used by doctors to implement more effective treatments.

You and your doctors will have an easier time getting to the root cause of certain medical conditions when a hormone test is performed. The results of your hormone test can be used to make improvements in different areas of your life.
