After you have had any type of major dental procedure, your dentist will emphasize how important it will be to take excellent care of your teeth not only while you recover, but afterwards as well. If you fail to heed this advice, you are only setting yourself up for new and potentially more complex problems.

Rather than undo all the good your dentist has already done for you, here are some great ways to take better care of your teeth after a major dental procedure.

Brush and Floss Very Carefully

Though it may be a bit uncomfortable to do so, you will still need to brush and floss your teeth regularly while recovering from your procedure. By doing so, you will decrease the chances food particles will accumulate and allow bacteria to grow, which could result in an infection.

Eat Soft Foods

For the first several days following your procedure, you should stick to a diet consisting of soft foods and liquids, which usually includes soups, mashed potatoes, milkshakes, smoothies, and other foods that won't put unnecessary stress on your mouth. This is especially important if you have recently had denture implants, since you will want to give your jawbone time to heal and strengthen.

These types of implants will help your smile in the long run, but can take some time to get used to. Plan on the healing time lasting anywhere from two to six months, so make use of a soft-food menu during most of that time.

Rinse Your Mouth

After any major dental procedure, guarding against infection is a top priority. To help lessen the chances you will suffer an infection, your dentist will advise you to rinse your mouth after every meal and snack you eat. In most cases, you will rinse with warm salt water three or four times daily, since this will loosen any food particles that may have been left behind after brushing and flossing.

If your dentist deems you to be particularly susceptible to infection, you may be given a special chlorhexidine rinse that is very effective at killing bacteria.

Avoid Physical Activity

Whether you have had implants or another type of major dental procedure, you can help out your teeth by avoiding physical activity as much as possible during your recovery period. While you don't have to be bedridden, you should plan on sitting around quite a bit, propping up your head with pillows to reduce bleeding and swelling, and avoiding any strenuous activities.

By choosing to listen to your dentist when given instructions for your recovery, you can improve your chances of not having complications. After all, making a few changes to your routine temporarily will be far better than finding yourself needing emergency dental services on a weekend or in the middle of the night.
