As the temperature drops and more people find themselves staying indoors most of the time, the instances of colds and flu rise and can become spread rather quickly. While it can be tempting to isolate yourself completely from the outside world in order to avoid becoming sick yourself, it is possible to continue to live life normally with an extra ounce of prevention. In order to stay healthy and keep your family healthy as well, follow these tips for a winter season that is free from a never-ending stream of sicknesses.

Wash Your Hands

Perhaps one of the best things that you can do to help prevent getting a cold or the flu is to wash your hands. The viruses that cause colds and influenza are spread by droplets of mucus and spit that are expelled when those infected sneeze, blow their noses, or wipe their eyes. Washing your hands frequently can help keep those germs off of your hands so that you dont end up spreading them onto yourself. If you have little ones at home that attend school, make sure to help them remember to wash their hands often as well, since they can be very susceptible.

Avoid Touching Your Face

Even if you wash your hands frequently, touching your mouth, nose, or eyes can place germs near the areas where it is easy for them to enter your body. Try to be conscious of where you are placing your hands in relation to your face so that you can break the habit of rubbing your eyes or touching your mouth. This is especially important for small children, since they frequently touch their own faces.

Eat A Good Diet

You can encourage an increase in your immune system by eating the right foods. A healthy diet that is full of good vitamins, especially C and E, can boost your immune system so that you can fight off those germs that do make their way into your body. Foods that are rich in vitamin C include:
- Citrus fruits
- Orange juice
- Green peppers
- Broccoli

Foods that have good amounts of vitamin E include:
- Nuts
- Sunflower and corn oils
- Sunflower seeds

Adding these foods to your diet during the winter can be a good way to prevent excess amounts of colds. Its important to continue eating as healthy as possible no matter what holiday parties crop up.

Take Care Of Yourself

It can be easy to let yourself become worn out and run down, especially during the holiday season. Taking good care of yourself will help to keep your body and immune system healthy so that you can fight off viruses. Making sure to get enough sleep every night and drinking plenty of water will ensure that you are feeling good and ready to take on whatever life may throw at you. Its also a good idea to de-stress when possible and take some time away from the endless holiday planning that can take a toll on ones health and well-being.
