This has to do with the fact that when you sleep, your body undergoes many reparative processes, from regulating hormones to repairing cells. If you don't sleep, or don't get sleep that is deep enough, your body will be unable to undertake these processes properly, or at all. In the long term, getting poor or infrequent sleep could have a major negative impact on your health and could even age you. Even though it may not always be easy to get the full recommended eight hours of sleep, making sleep a priority and practicing good sleep hygiene by, for example, avoiding bright screens an hour before bed time, can still have a positive impact.
