One thing that many oil users and consumers may not know is the rich history of oil in the perfume world. More and more people are making the switch from over-the-counter perfume to their own specialty blends that they've mixed themselves. With the onslaught of sensitive skin and allergies, standard perfume just simply doesn't cut it any longer.

A specific oil called balanos oil has traditionally been used in Egypt as a base for the many fragrant perfumes that were available. The presence of such natural and homemade perfumes in a historical context lets us know that there truly isn't anything new under the sun.

Balanitesa Egypyiaca

So many different perfumes consisted of very common oils that we know today. Galbanum and myrrh were considered some of the rarest at the time. But other ingredients like geranium and rose were much more readily available. There were very specific approaches and ways to blending the oils that made some of the most enticing fragrances at that time. Balanos oil, which is derived from the seeds of the balanitesa egypyiaca, received its name due to the location it originated from. It is currently still growing in parts of Sudan.

In ancient times balanos oil was warmed with myrrh, which in its most simplest form, is much more volatile. When the two come together there is a specific type of fusion that happens and any type of remaining particles, from the seeds or otherwise, are drained out. There was also a pressing type of method that was used when making perfume at this time in history. Other oils were sometimes added to the mixture to add additional notes to the oils.

Essential Oils

Similarly, today there are so many different oils that can be combined to make the perfect scent. Not only a scent that smells amazing and lasts a long time but also one that won't irritate sensitive skin. It really depends on the type of feeling you want the smell to invoke. Oils like cedar wood, vanilla, vetiver, sandalwood, lemon, grapefruit, lavender and geranium are just some of the many essential oils that are available which can be mixed in many different ways to make very signature scents. There are sweet, spicy, musk, and heady options aplenty when it comes to essential oils.

While oils serve many different functions both externally and internally, some of those functions are completely lost on some of even the most well-versed users. There is really nothing as versatile and complex as essential oils. They can heal, comfort, invoke, replenish and so much more. So if you're in the market for a new perfume, if you are sick of smelling like everyone else who also has the newest fragrance, or you simply feel overpowered by the scent of many types of perfumes, making your own may be just the option you've been searching for.
