Now that the summer of 2021 might consist of actually going places and seeing people, it's time to start thinking about that elusive beach body. Whether you want to tighten those abs, tone those arms, or just want to start feeling better in your mind and in your skin, it's important to start incorporating some exercise into your daily routine.
The reality is that working out should be fun, and you should choose the most effective exercises that you enjoy to create a sustainable routine. But if you're new to working out, it's daunting to decide what to do. Do you lift weights? Throw yourself into cardio? Do 30-minute ab workouts? Here are a few options.
Some people actually call swimming the perfect workout. It requires you to engage all your muscles without the high impact of running that can cause wear and tear in your joints. Doing laps of all different strokes will cause you to work up to 48 muscles simultaneously, and it will help you burn fat, tone your muscles, and increase your overall strength.
The only drawback of swimming is that you need a pool; while the cost of inground pool installation can seem intimidating, you might be surprised to learn that it's within your budget. But if not, you can check out your local gym or sign up for a membership at a swim club.
- Strength Training
If you've ever been to the gym, you've probably noticed the corner of body-builder-looking men that seem to monopolize the weight lifting equipment. For that reason, it can seem like strength training is out of your wheelhouse. But it's not!
Anyone can get into weight lifting, and contrary to popular belief, it won't actually blow up your muscles and make you look bulky. Muscle building actually helps burn calories, meaning that the more muscle you gain the more fat you will lose. You just need to make sure you learn the right weight lifting form first so that you don't end up injuring yourself.
There is no easier or more pleasant way to exercise than walking. While it may seem like you're not actually doing any work, that's the beauty of it. Walking helps strengthen bones, burn fat, improve cholesterol levels, and maintain healthy blood pressure. It also does wonders for your mood and is the best stress reliever during a particularly overwhelming work week. Whether you like walking solo or with a buddy, it's the perfect excuse to get outside and move your body.
- Tai Chi
Tai chi is an unconventional form of exercise and made up of elegant movements that flow smoothly into each other. But despite how it sounds, you don't even have to be graceful or strong to reap the benefits of the Chinese martial arts. Tai chi is great for both the body and the mind, and there are classes offered at all levels so that you can start from square one. It's a great way to center yourself while gaining muscle, and you're guaranteed to feel renewed after each practice.
In the same vein, yoga can be a therapeutic way to work out. Often overlooked, yoga has tons of health benefits; it can lead to improved heart health and bone strength and can relieve painful back problems. It will also help with your flexibility and balance while building strength. Plus, each yoga practice ends with a Savasana period which quite literally consists of laying on your mat in total relaxation. Just for that reason, trying yoga is worth it.
Exercising shouldn't be something you dread. In fact, it can be something you look forward to each day: a time where you get to let all your other stresses go and focus on yourself. While it might take a few weeks, following a consistent workout schedule incorporating these forms of exercise will garner results that will make you look and feel great.
