Managing chronic pain can be exhausting because it sucks the life out of you. It can be difficult just to complete your day-to-day tasks. Fortunately, there are some solutions that can help you to get back to living and keeping your pain level in check. Here are four surprising ways to handle chronic pain.
Manage Your Stress

Stress can work to exacerbate the amount of pain that you’re experiencing. You need to develop strategies that help to keep your stress levels in check. This could be that you practice yoga if it’s physically possible, or perhaps simply breathing exercises when you’re having a particularly bad day. Light exercise that involves getting outdoors might also prove to be beneficial when it comes to reducing your stress load. Something as simple as getting outside if you can could help you feel better. If that is impossible, listen to music, audiobooks, or even just practice meditation exercises if you can’t get out of bed. Finding an outlet for the stress in your life will make managing your pain a little easier.

Limit Vices

Alcohol usage and smoking can work against your body. This may be contributing to your increasing levels of pain. You need to be able to get enough rest in order for your body to recover. While it can be tempting to succumb to short-term relief, alcohol can contribute to you not getting the sleep that you need in order to manage your pain. Smoking is harmful to your cardiovascular system and could be increasing the way that your body is experiencing the pain. Limiting these types of vices could help to make your pain level more manageable.

Monitor Meds

Drug titration is the process of adjusting the dose of a medication for the maximum benefit without adverse effects. When a drug has a narrow therapeutic index, titration is especially important, because the range between the dose at which a drug is effective and the dose at which side effects occur is small.

The problem with many types of pain medications is that they can cause a balancing act for you to achieve relief without having to deal with the other side effects. If you can, look into other treatments. Chronic pain services work with you to give you the right level of balance when it comes to being able to live your life. For example, ketamine titration can offer you longer lasting relief without having to remember to take a pill every day that may lose efficacy as your body builds up a tolerance to it.

Track Your Progress

Determining your triggers can give you some insight into the types of activities or stressors that lead to your chronic pain worsening. Write down your pain level and the types of activities that you did each day in a logbook. If you were stressed out at work or there was some sort of emotional trigger, this can give you and your doctor better insight into things that can be done to help you manage your ongoing pain issues.

Handling chronic pain is likely going to be an ongoing battle. Use these tips to arm yourself so that you can fight the good fight and win. And remember; even if none of these tips work all the time, all can work some of the time, and will help you regain a bit of control and happiness in your life. You can do it.
