4 Good Ways To Fight Chronic Pain

In the 4th Century, Saint Augustine pronounced a truth that is as pertinent today as then: “The greatest evil is physical pain.” One of the finest benevolences in life, therefore, is the ability to reduce or eliminate pain.

When the pain being suffered is chronic, meaning ongoing and inescapable, the ability to diminish or abolish that pain is a real virtue. Permanently ending chronic pain seems virtually miraculous to the sufferer.

The science of handling pain, however, is fraught with controversy these days because of the devastating opioid epidemic that has ruined so many lives and livelihoods. The question arises, if you wisely do not resort to the use of opioids to fight chronic pain, what recourse do you have? Fortunately, there are good alternatives available.

Healing Saunas

One treatment for the relief of chronic pain that is relatively new and thus little known but quite promising is an infrared sauna. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the surrounding air, an infrared sauna surpasses the skin barrier to increase body temperature.

The increase of warmth is less than in a standard sauna, which allows an individual to remain in treatment longer. These novel saunas have a variety of settings depending on the type of treatment you are seeking.

It is worth noting that, beyond pain relief, these devices are also effective in treating other conditions, including removing environmental toxins, diminishing inflammation, enhancing neurological functioning and improving immune function. Individuals who use these cutting-edge devices typically report they are also quite enjoyable.

Tai Chi, Qi Gong or Yoga

If getting in (slow) motion is more your thing, you may want to seek chronic pain relief from one of these traditional Eastern forms of pain control. Yoga, for those unfamiliar, involves adopting a series of static poses that articulate joints and release pressure.

Tai Chi, which is also called “meditation in motion,” uses a series of movements aligned with the pace of your breathing to extend and flex joints and strengthen muscles. Qi Gong, likewise, is a more vigorous - but not much faster - use of stretches and movements intended to loosen and relieve troubled joints.

Some American sufferers are unsure about using these ancient Asian practices. Therefore, it is important to know that their use has been scientifically verified repeatedly.

Acupuncture or Dry Needling

These two forms of pain treatment seem quite similar on the surface, or rather, just below the surface of the skin. Both use tiny, sanitized needles inserted into the outer layer of the dermis to bring pain relief. They operate, however, from different philosophies.

Acupuncture, which has been scientifically demonstrated to be effective, leaves needles in place in the skin for a set time period. Sometimes these needles are electrified to produce a desired energy flow.

Dry Needling often involves the momentary implantation of a needle in particular trigger point areas. Both forms have practitioners who follow various principles of how they are to be applied, though in practice they are both helpful.

Whole Health Improvement

When you suffer chronic pain, it can impact every aspect of your life. You may find yourself less willing to follow through on your regular routines, including simply taking good care of yourself. Conversely, it has been demonstrated that maintaining your usual good health routines is a primary tool for fighting chronic pain.

Among those rituals you might want to reinforce daily are good hydration, getting a good night’s sleep, avoiding tobacco and staying active. Your body fights against the pain you experience in order to enable you to continue normal functioning. By providing for all your body’s systems, you strengthen yourself to keep up the good fight.

Many sufferers can attest that chronic pain seems to worsen over time. In actuality, the pain does not increase. Rather, we become more aware of it and our bodies learn to react to it automatically. Just so, we can help our bodies successfully cope with pain that chronically bedevils us by pursuing these methods of pain reduction.
