Winter brings all kinds of joys and celebrations, but what winter also brings is pesky skin problems. During those long winter days, our skin is most likely to act up due to the cold and dry weather conditions.

That same dryness and cold are known to cause our skin to lose moisture and with the lack of moisture, our skin starts behaving badly.

Fortunately, there are many different ways in which we can solve those problems and help our skin get through the cold weather.

Let’s see some of the most common skin problems that occur during the winter and how we can help our skin.

1. Dry skin

Probably the most frequent problem almost everyone faces during the colder months is the dry skin. Skin dryness happens due to the drop in humidity levels outside. Without enough humidity, the air outside is dry and cold and because of this, the water in our skin is more likely to evaporate faster. Skin without enough humidity becomes dry.

Dry skin can be pretty annoying, it is itchy and sometimes red – very undesirable. However, there is a simple solution to this problem.

During winter months to prevent that pesky skin dryness try using less aggressive soaps. Additionally, using moisturizers during cold months is a must. Applying moisturizer cremes and lotions at least once a day will keep your skin hydrated and if you know you have a tendency to develop dry skin then moisturize at least twice a day.

2. Winter rash and irritated and red skin

A lot of people tend to develop irritated skin during winter. These irritations are often caused by dry skin. Many times, those irritated red patches of skin can last throughout the whole winter period. This can be very annoying and if the irritation is not treated right it can reoccur the next winter again.

In order to treat those nasty rashes and redness, you would need to visit the best local dermatologist in your area. There, they will be able to diagnose a rash and prescribe the treatment.

Most rashes are easy to treat and get rid of. All you need to do is use moisturizing creams, petroleum jelly, and oatmeal soaps. Oatmeal soaps are ideal for soothing your irritated skin. Then after you have calmed your skin a bit, try putting petroleum jelly onto the irritated spot. Petroleum jelly will be a barrier that seals the moisture into your skin. Natural oils such as coconut or olive oil are good for dealing with irritated skin, too. Natural oils soothe and hydrate the skin.

3. Peeling and flaky skin

Another nasty side-effect of dry and cold weather includes flaky and peeling skin. If you are one of those people who like to take long hot showers during those cold winter days, then you can very easily develop a peeling skin. And if you try to cover that peeling skin with makeup you can cause even worse problems for yourself.

Yes, peeling skin, especially if located on your face, can be uncomfortable and annoying. But if you don’t treat it the right way it can get worse in no time.

In order to treat the already peeling and flaky skin, you can start by using soaps that don’t dry out your skin, then use moisturizers that are appropriate for your skin type, and use products recommended by your dermatologist. When taking showers, forget using hot water, only lukewarm or warm water. Gently pat your skin dry, and use soft towels that won’t irritate your peeling skin further.

4. Itchy skin

Another side-effect of dry skin is itchy skin. Itchy skin patches happen due to the lack of water in your skin. In order to avoid all the pesky itchiness, use oatmeal soaps to treat your skin. Oatmeal will soothe itchy skin and reduce redness and inflammation.

As you can see, most of the skin problems that occur during winter are due to dry skin. The lack of moisture in our skin can cause many different problems that if not treated right can become even worse over time. The best advice is to hydrate both from inside and outside as much and as often as you can. Drink a lot of water and use all kinds of moisturizing lotions and creams to help your skin survive the winter without any pesky problems!
