Looking for a vegan and plant-based way to look younger than ever? Bakuchiol might just be the answer you’re looking for!

It’s a potent antioxidant that is known for reducing discolorations caused by the environment and it’s really soothing too. In fact, results have been likened to that of skincare-darling retinol. With roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine, bakuchiol could be the natural alternative you seek for sensitive skin to look younger and healthier.

How Bakuchiol Works

Is your skin easily irritated? If so, bakuchiol may be worth trying over retinol. Whereas retinol does cause irritations, bakuchiol has soothing properties that comfort your skin. It’s an antioxidant that does well to fight the visible signs of aging, smoothing away fine lines while targeting skin firmness. It also does quite well for those with acne-prone skin.

You don’t have to give up retinol to use it either. You can use them both together, which can help you tolerate retinol when your skin was previously irritated by it.

What to Look for with Bakuchiol

When you choose to use bakuchiol, you will want to look for a concentration that is between 0.5 and two percent for it to give you visible results. It’s best as a serum or lotion. As an oil, it will work great if you have very parched and dry skin.

Oil formulations of bakuchiol perform best when applied as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine just prior to going to sleep. You’ll also get the best results if you use leave-on AHA or BHA-based exfoliants.

Is Bakuchiol Better Than Retinol?

Retinol has the advantage of time and has been studied since the mid-1980s. As such, it is still considered the hallmark of anti-aging in skin care. That doesn’t mean bakuchiol is inferior though.

Bakuchiol definitely gives you a vegan alternative, though if you’re not strictly vegan, you can feel free to use both ingredients on your skin. They share some similarities though among the biggest is that bakuchiol can help your skin with the visible signs of aging without irritating it.

A Word About Bakuchiol and Pregnancy

One last thing to know about bakuchiol is that it’s often touted as safe for those that are pregnant or breastfeeding, unlike retinol. However, because it’s still relatively new, nothing is set in stone to fully confirm this theory. It’s best to avoid this ingredient if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless your doctor has given you the go-ahead.

Be careful though, for many formulations of bakuchiol still use a little retinol in them. Reading the labels will help you find something that fits your lifestyle and gives you the skin results you’re looking for.
