Why Do You Have Bad Breath In The Morning?

Morning breath is often accepted as stronger smelling and unpleasant, but this is not always the case and many causes can be treated. Often bad breath is caused by small particles of food that remain between the teeth and gums, dry mouth, and poor oral hygiene. Other causes include damaged teeth; ear, nose and throat infections; or medical concerns such as diabetes.

Brush and floss to avoid bad breath

As the body rests overnight the intake of water halts, which allows any food particles that are present to remain in place. Small bits of food that remain on or around the teeth and gums will begin to rot and the smell will remain for the rest of the night and in the morning. To avoid this, teeth should be brushed well and flossed before bed every night. Ensure all food is removed and no residue remains on the teeth.

The lack of water consumed during the night also increases the likelihood of dry mouth occurring. As the bacterium that naturally occurs within the mouth is not rinsed away by water or saliva, it will continue to grow and smell.

Maintain good oral hygiene to avoid bad breath

As the buildup within the mouth continues and the bacteria and food pieces are not rinsed away, there is an increased occurrence of cavities, which in turn can create an unpleasant smell to the breath in the morning. To combat this, brush and floss before bed and again in the morning, and ensure enough water and fluids are consumed throughout the day.

Poor oral hygiene can be a main cause of bad breath, as cavities, rotting teeth, and bacteria buildup all create an unpleasant odor. Increasing the cleanliness of the mouth and maintaining good oral hygiene will amount to less bacteria buildup and fewer cavities, reducing the occurrence of bad breath in the morning.

Treat medical conditions to avoid bad breath

There are medical conditions that can lead to bad breath in the morning, including diabetes, tonsilitis, sinus infections, bronchitis, and other infections. Treating the underlying cause of a medical concern can prevent bad breath from occurring, even overnight.

Infections not in the mouth can also cause bad breath as the bacteria or even fungal infections will have an odor that will spread throughout the ear, nose, and throat areas. As these areas are all connected, an infection in one area can affect them all.

Unpleasant morning breath is a very common occurrence, but there are many ways to address the causes and decrease the concern. Strong oral hygiene, including brushing and flossing teeth twice daily as well as regular dental care by your dental professional will reduce the causes of bad breath by ensuring teeth are healthy and infections are treated and cleaned out.

Increased fluid intake can help prevent bacteria and dry mouth, and treating any other medical concerns that are contributing are necessary to reduce bad breath at any time.
