Coffee is known for its versatility in food and beverages, and most recently, is being touted for its prized health benefits. Whether you call it morning joe, sludge, jitter juice, cuppa mud, java, or hair-raiser, the primarily caffeinated beverage has been a cultural staple for a few hundred years.

Learn more about the little bean with big prospects and find out what health benefits coffee has in store for you.

Is There More Than Just One Main Benefit of Coffee?

For most people, the top benefit of a hot cup of steaming brain octane is waking up and doing so quickly.

The bright-eyed and bushy-tailed approach to the workday that comes from an early morning coffee tasting also has multiple benefits for your health that far surpass getting to that six a.m. meeting without having your shirt on inside out or two different shoes on your feet.

Multiple studies, including a few at Harvard medical center, have researched the benefits and effects of coffee. There are two critical takeaways from the current evidence-based research. One is the definition of moderate coffee intake. Other vital information includes the benefits of regular moderate coffee intake over time.

What Is the Definition of Moderate Coffee Intake?

Multiple studies on coffee consumption, including those from the Mayo Clinic, identify a moderate intake of bean brew to be about four cups a day. The measurement comes from the amount of caffeine present in one cup of coffee.

People who are caffeine averse or prefer the taste of coffee but don’t want to exceed more than the recommended amount often turn to decaffeinated coffee as a safer and more practical alternative.

The general response to decaffeinated coffee is summed up in one statement, death to decaf. However, the negative

sentiment is misguided. Decaffeinated coffee is never truly without caffeine. The process by which the caffeine is removed is either by chemical extraction or a washing process.

Neither removal method completely eradicates the caffeine in coffee, and it only lessens it significantly. Those who choose to decrease their caffeine intake often start the day with a fully caffeinated cup of joe and then switch to decaf for the remainder of the day.

What Are the Benefits of Moderate Coffee Intake Over Time?

Nutrition experts at Johns Hopkins University School Of Medicine suggest at least 10 health benefits to coffee, based on caffeine content and the general molecular makeup that can change your life and prolong your longevity. The health benefits for die-hard liquid lightning drinkers are just a bonus to the caffeine content.

Chances of heart failure decrease

Less likely to develop type 2 diabetes

Women who drink coffee are less likely to suffer from kidney disease, heart disease, diabetes, or stroke

Chances of Parkinson's disease are lessened

Increases healthy liver enzymes

DNA grows stronger from dark coffee

Decreases odds of colon cancer

The risks of Alzheimer’s disease are lower

The likelihood of strokes are decreased

Glucose processing is made easier

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Coffee?

While coffee has significant health benefits, there are also potential downsides if imbibed incorrectly. Too much coffee or coffee served in unhealthy ways can be detrimental to your health.

Too Much Coffee: Exceeding Moderate Intake

More than the recommended moderate intake of coffee can cause your body to react to an excess of caffeine. Coffee earned one of its monikers, jitter juice, through the symptoms that drinkers experience when they have too much caffeine.

Too Much Coffee: Unhealthy Intake Approaches

Coffee does an excellent job waking people up in the morning and providing them with an added boost to get through the afternoon slump. However, some people don't like the taste of coffee. It can be bitter to novice drinkers.

Thus, coffee is mixed, blended, or stirred with high sugar, high-calorie sweeteners, and other artificial ingredients that do not benefit your health.

While coffee has impressive health benefits that boost longevity and prevent disease, be sure to remember that only a moderate intake of coffee, four cups of black coffee, is beneficial to your overall health.
