Working from home seems like dream come true, but it can be more stressful than going to the outside workplace. Children, TV, noise, and other distractions can affect your productivity and prevent you from focusing on your tasks.

This leads to frustration and spending more time than usual glued to your desk, slouching and staring at the computer screen. Since this can disrupt your emotional and physical health, here are some tips to improve home office well-being and create a nourishing work environment.

Maintain a clutter-free space

Keeping the home office clean and clutter-free should be on the top of your list. Dust can jump-start the allergies and the last thing you want are teary eyes and sneezing during video meetings.

Cleaning the workstation every time after work can be helpful and create a welcoming ambiance to work the next day. Keeping the clutter off your desk won't take more than a few minutes, but it will mean a lot to your enthusiasm and well-being.

Bring in the plants

Plants, even the artificial ones, a perfect to create a visual resting spot for your eyes. Nature has a calming effect on the brain and can lower stress levels even as a motif on your wallpapers. If you are not a plant-person, choose succulents that don't require much care or a believable imitation.

Those who love having plants should choose the varieties that process the air and make more oxygen, like peace lily and areca palm. Hanging a picture of a forest or other dense greenery can be enough to boost your mood, especially if you don't have space for real plants.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle

Your lifestyle can determine how you will feel at the home office every day. Drinking the day before can leave you with a hangover, and eating food that causes bloating can make you feel uncomfortable at your desk. Beans, carbonated drinks, broccoli, dairy, rye, beer, and onions can impair your performance by making you sleepy, gassy, and in physical pain.

Exercise in the morning for at least 20 minutes can keep your spine muscles strong and stop the onset of pain in your lower back. Also, stand up and stretch from time to time to unstiffen the body and enhance circulation so more oxygen and nutrients can get to your organs. A healthy lifestyle takes patience and work, but once started it can give you long-lasting emotional and physical benefits.

Buy the right chair

The experts and scientists often compare sitting with smoking seeing it as a health hazard of the modern age. To lessen the effect it can have on your posture, having an ergonomic and cozy chair should be on the top of your list.

Moreover, pay attention to the way you are sitting and make sure your computer screen is in line with your eyes. It won’t cure the overall effects of sitting on your body, but it can decrease the stress on your back, neck, eyes, and arms causing you discomfort.

Invest in an adjustable standing desk

Sitting or standing for a prolonged time can cause pain, so consider getting an adjustable standing desk. It allows you to switch positions quickly and remain focused on your work, rather than discomfort. Use anti-fatigue mats to dampen the impact of standing on your joints and spine, as well as to create a non-slippery surface to stand on.

If you are a person that gets carried away with work, set an alarm to remind you to stand or sit down after a while. With a sit-to-stand mechanism, this type of desk offers more control over your home office well-being and productivity.

Go on frequent breaks

Being engrossed in your work can make you forget to take a break or willingly sacrifice it. Instead of making one half-an-hour break, go on frequent ones that will range from five to 20 minutes. During that time walking around the home, go up and down the stairs, and stretch with light yoga.

Being physically active will bring you more energy, clean your head, lower the agitation, and boost your creativity. Additionally, keep a water bottle by your side at all times to stay hydrated and avoid headaches that come with not drinking enough liquids during the day.

In conclusion

The way you approach home office well-being will determine your emotional and physical state. The key is to concentrate on respecting the same work ethics you would on the regular job, as well as improving yourself and the environment. It's the only way to harvest the benefits of a work-at-home lifestyle and avoid impairing your overall health.
