bad-gum-disease-signsTheres nothing like pretty white teeth that give you a beautiful smile. However, when your oral health is bad, the smile that can light up the world is in jeopardy of being diminished.

One dental problem that can make this possible is periodontal (gum) disease.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, which is also known as gum disease, is a bacterial infection. It affects the teeths gum and bones. Unfortunately, periodontal disease can go undetected. Most people dont know they have this oral health problem until its in its advanced stage.

The mildest form of gum disease is gingivitis. While this causes red, swollen, bleeding gums, a severe case of gum disease is far worse. It destroys gum tissue and bones, makes your teeth loose, and even worse, causes your teeth to fall out.

Gum disease can even affect your overall health. Researchers believe that periodontal disease is linked to serious health issues such as stroke, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. Its also believed that gum disease carries a high risk during pregnancy.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people over the age of 35 should especially be concerned about gum disease. This is because periodontal is the main cause behind their tooth loss.
