There’s a wonderful win-win situation just waiting to happen for you. You can help reduce your carbon footprint on the world and save money. Sounds too good to be true? You’re not dreaming so stop pinching yourself! The answer lies in re-growing fruits and vegetables from their leftover scraps.

Even if you have a totally brown thumb rather than a green one, you can go completely green by growing your own produce. Here are some you can keep re-growing indefinitely and how to do it!

  1. Green Onions

The craze for re-growing vegetables started becoming popular with this tip for green onions. It’s one of the easiest to start with too. If the idea of re-growing your own foods seems scary, start with green onions. Just cut them about an inch from the root and then put them in a container of water.

  1. Celery

When you feel confident with your ability to re-grow green onions, try it with celery! Just cut off your celery so there’s about an inch or so left at the base. Put that base in a bowl filled with water in plenty of sunlight. In about a week, it should have leaves sprouting from the center and be thicker. When that happens, put it in a pot with soil and keep it in your garden.

  1. Lettuce

Romaine lettuce in particular has the same re-growing technique as celery! Try it and you’ll soon have enough for a fully farm-to-table Caesar salad!

  1. Herbs

Herbs are so pricey at the supermarket! Instead of spending too much, take the last couple inches of stem for your basil, mint, cilantro, or any other herb and stand them upright in a glass filled with water. Once the new roots sprout, put them into a pot with soil. You can leave them on your windowsill or take them out to your garden.

  1. Sweet Potatoes

While sweet potatoes are really easy to re-grow, you need some space to do it in. You’ll put toothpicks in a sweet potato so it’s suspended above a glass with half of it in water. Once the roots get several inches, you’ll need to find it a new home in the soil.

  1. Potatoes

Potatoes also need room, but they’re so easy you have to go try it out now! All you have to do is cut one of them in half. Then stick it so the dents that look like eyes on the skin are facing upward. In a few weeks, it will start to sprout.

  1. Avocados

And finally, avocados, which technically are a fruit, are a really smart one to re-grow. The prices keep rising on them and if you love guacamole or avocado toast, you won’t have to pay for them anymore when you re-grow them. The next time you get an avocado, take the pit in the center, wash it off and use toothpicks to hang it over a jar or bowl of water. Make sure there’s enough water to cover about an inch of the bottom of the seed. Leave it in a warm place but not in the sun and keep an eye on the water level. Patience pays as it can take as many as six weeks before your very own avocado tree begins to grow.

Which ones will you start growing yourself?
