You’ve worked long and hard throughout the year to get ready for summer, and it’s finally here. Now’s the time to wear your favorite sundress and hang out by the water. While summer is a time for fun and relaxation, it’s not a time for abandoning healthy habits. If anything, you should pay extra close attention to your wellness during the warmest months of the year. Here are six tips and tricks to staying well throughout the summer.

1. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate

It’s important to drink plenty of water all the time, but especially during the hottest time of year - especially if you’ll be participating in a lot of outdoor activities or hanging out in the sunshine. Your body’s moisture will be depleted rapidly if you don’t replenish it often. Dehydration is a serious problem that can lead to severe illness. Always keep a water bottle nearby and set a goal to drink the recommended two liters of water each day.

2. Keep Eating Clean

You’ve worked hard for your summer body, and your clean diet has you feeling happier and healthier than ever. Just because you’ve reached a goal doesn’t mean it’s time to slack off.

Your holiday should be fun and relaxed, but you should continue to make the healthy choices that your body responds best to. Treat yourself occasionally, but be mindful of the link between sugar and hot flashes which can negatively impact your vacation fun with family and friends.

3. Play in the Sun (Safely)

You’ve waited all year for the sun to come out, so don’t hide from it now. Sunshine is a valuable source of vitamin D, which your body needs for blood and bone health. Plus, it helps to lift your mood, which is why you tend to feel happier in summer than winter.

It’s perfectly fine to go outside and soak up some rays. Just make sure you limit your exposure to 30 minutes during peak hours, and wear UV protection to prevent sunburn. Your necessary level of protection depends on the amount of melanin in your skin. Usually, paler skin requires a higher SPF.

4. Get Plenty of Exercise

Exercise likely played a huge role in your life while you were getting fit for summer, but now that you’ve reached your fitness goal, it’s time to get into maintenance mode. Luckily, your vacation offers plenty of opportunities for movement.

Instead of lounging by the lake all week, go for a swim or rent a paddleboard. Play a game of tennis or go for a run on the beach. Getting your workout in during your holiday gives you a new scene to explore and enjoy while you work on your mind and body.

5. Invest in Insect Repellant

You’re not the only one excited about summer weather. As things heat up, the bugs come out from their hiding places in full force, and many of them are ready to eat you. When hiking, watch out for fire ants, which deliver a painful punch of a bite and can cause allergic reactions requiring hospitalization.

Also, watch out for disease-carrying mosquitoes. Protect yourself against buzzing, biting and itching by covering your exposed skin with bug spray capable of warding off dangerous insects.

6. Find Balance, Relax and Have Fun

When you’re trying to live a healthy lifestyle, there’s a lot of information to sift through as you discover what works for you. With all of the gurus, food bloggers and family members in your ear trying to offer support, you can easily become obsessed and overwhelmed.

Make sure you’re seeking a balance between your physical and mental health. Take breaks when you need them. Relax, and enjoy cake with your family. Remember that moderation is key, and you’re worthy of a happy, balanced life. Have the greatest summer of your life with these tips for maintaining your fitness and emotional wellness.
