The study found that the ration of bacteria in the intestines is altered in the presence of both green and black tea – while this happens differently from green to black tea. The green tea’s polyphenols were absorbed and altered by the liver, while the black tea’s polyphenols are a bit too large to be properly absorbed by the small intestine. However, the gut bacterium and the manner in which the fatty acid chain is built alters the necessary metabolites which helps to promote weight loss. The results suggest that both green and black teas are prebiotic substances that induce the growth of good microorganisms that contribute to a person’s well being.

“It was known that green tea polyphenols are more effective and offer more health benefits than black tea polyphenols since green tea chemicals are absorbed into the blood and tissue,” says Susanne Henning, the lead author on the study and a professor at UCLA’s Center for Human Nutrition. “Our findings suggest that black tea, through a specific mechanism in the gut microbiome, may also contribute to good health and weight loss in humans.”

During the study, there were four different groups tested. Two groups did not have any tea extract while one had green tea extract and the other black tea extract. The mice were given this diet for four weeks and then their intestinal makeup was tested.

There were several different things that researchers were on the lookout for. One being any type of liver issues that may have been present in the diets with high fat content and how that may have been lacking in the presence of the teas as well. Results showed that only the mice that had the black tea as part of their diet where able to increase a specific gut bacteria called pseudobutyrivibrio, which is different than how the green tea positively affects the internal system.

For those who love black tea, this may be an even bigger incentive to keep the tea drinking habit going. While many can’t give up their coffee affinity, green tea is far and away the more healthy and impressive option. Even with 76% total fat by their weight, it’s mostly monounsaturated fat. This is beneficial in helping to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) without harming levels of good cholesterol (HDL). All nuts are high in antioxidants like omega 3 fatty acids, and vitamin E, but macadamia nuts are the highest in monounsaturated fats. Studies from the University of Hawaii concluded that total cholesterol of those who added macadamia nuts to their diets for a month was 10 points lower than those who did not.

Pistachios are high in a form of vitamin E called gamma-tocopherol that has been shown to be protective against certain types of cancer, including lung. Participants of a recent study who ate roughly two ounces of pistachios a day for four weeks showed a significant increase in gamma-tocopherol. Your best bet is to try to have a few handfuls daily.

When researchers compared the 10 vegetables that are most frequently consumed in the US, onions had the 3rd highest level of phenolic compounds, which are thought to be among the most potent anticancer substances in foods. A Finnish study of men who frequently ate onions and other foods high in phenolic compounds showed that they were 60% less likely than those who ate smaller amounts.

All varieties of winter squash are extremely high in beta-carotene. A long running Japanese study of over 57,000 people found that the participants who ate the most pumpkin had the lowest rates of gastric, breast, lung, and colorectal cancers. Alternatives to pumpkin are carrots, broccoli, and all winter squashes, including butternut, acorn, and spaghetti squash.

A recent study showed that people who drank two or more cups of either black or green tea daily reduced their risk for squamous cell carcinoma by 30%. This effect seems to grow over time, as some study participants who had drank tea daily for up to 47 years reduced their risk by 51%. It is believed that anti-oxidants in tea can counter free radicals that are triggered by sun exposure.


Foods That Fight Allergies

Vitamin E
Nuts, especially almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts, are a good source of vitamin E, which helps to minimize inflammation. Eat a single one ounce serving of any of these nuts daily year round to help prevent symptoms. If you do have symptoms, increase the servings or add a few tablespoons of peanut butter as well.

Omega 3’s
Cold water fish like salmon, mackerel, trout, herring, and sardines as well as walnuts and flaxseed contain omega 3 fatty acids, which help fight inflammation. Eat at least two servings of cold water fish each week year round, and three servings during the seasons when you experience airborne allergies. Flaxseed can be added easily too, as it can be found in supplement form.

Oysters, shrimp, crab, legumes, whole grains, and tofu are all high in zinc, which has antibacterial and antiviral effects that provide relief for immune systems that are overworked by fighting allergies. Have 6 oysters, 6 shrimp, or a few crabs each week, and twice that when allergies flare. Also have one serving of whole grains, beans, or tofu daily.
