Dealing With Itchy Skin Can Be A Bummer

Trusted Health Products

The skin is easily the most sensitive and largest organ the body possesses. For this reason, a myriad of issues can plague it throughout a lifetime. Even if you, or someone you know, doesn't suffer from painful and worrisome skin conditions, you likely have dealt with issues of skin itchiness at some point.

That can be difficult to combat and treat. A recent study conducted recently by the American Academy of Dermatology discovered and uncovered some things about itchy skin that some may not have considered.

Itchy Skin Causes

Firstly, the study found that when chronic itch becomes an issue, it can really interrupt the quality of life a person can experience. There are many different causes for itchy skin, and while some common causes are sensitivity to certain body products, perfumes or dyes, other reasons can be directly linked to common skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or hives.

But more serious and contagious skin diseases such as ringworm and scabies can also cause incessant itching. During the study, Dr. Galadari provided participants with a few different methods that can be used to help in soothing the skin.

Cold temperatures on skin tends to help alleviate itch. This is likely because the coldness counteracts what causes the irritation to begin with. Itchy skin can also start to feel inflamed or hot, which is nicely treated by a cold rag or an icepack applied to the area.

Treating the affected area for five to 10 minutes at a time is suggested. Another great option for the treatment of itchy skin is to take a soothing oatmeal bath. In the situation of contracting poison ivy or chickenpox, this helps to directly pinpoint the irritation that is causing the itch to begin with.

Creams And Lotions

In the event that the itching becomes incredibly difficult to deal with and cumbersome, or the prior suggestions aren't as effective, you can try applying topical cream to the affected area. Make sure to choose a product that has pramoxine within it.

Not only will this help to lessen the intensity of the need to itch, but will also help the healing process move along much quicker. It's a common occurrence to create sores or additional irritation when aggressive itching takes place. Products with pramoxine help to directly treat and deal with both of those issues associated with itchy skin.

Depending on what the initial cause of the irritation is, sometimes treating it can be as simple as switching lotions and using an icepack. For other causes it can be a bit more severe. In the event that these suggestions don't do a proper job of helping to combat skin itchiness, it's imperative that you see a trained and licensed dermatologist.

It can be really difficult to deal with skin issues, but if they persist and aren't properly treated, they have an even greater likelihood of becoming chronic and that's not something you want to combat and deal with.

Another one of the studys findings is that hot water is terrible for the skin. If you are the type of person that loves to take scalding hot showers, you're going to need to change that. Because of the sensitivity of the skin, hot water can actually aid irritation as opposed to correcting it. Luke warm or cool showers are the best for the skin and are less shocking and abrasive.
