What Is Sclerotherapy?

Trusted Health Products

The process of sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that is done specifically to get rid of spider veins and varicose veins. This is a process that has to be completed by a trained and licensed physician to eliminate those pesky, protruding veins from the legs.

Typically the way that the process works is that a solution is injected right into the vein that is visible and protruding. The solution tends to be a salt solution. When the solution hits the blood it causes the vessel to stick together after it swells briefly. This then turns into scar tissue that fades very quickly in time.

This procedure has actually been around since the 1930s, but it has recently been reintroduced and many people who suffer from pesky varicose veins are giving it a chance as a viable option. Those who would be the best candidates for this type of procedure are those who are in relatively good health. Pregnant women are not able to have it done due to the protection of the newborn baby being of the utmost importance.

Those who may be predisposed to blood clots or have had them in the past are not eligible for this type of procedure. Most clinics and offices that do perform this corrective practice do advise that patients will be treated on an individual basis and overall health will be determined before the procedure is started.

The process for this practice usually employs a tiny, thin needle that helps with precision. It pumps the salt solution exactly where it needs to go and may cause a little bit of discomfort in the first couple of minutes. The time that the procedure takes in total is roughly half an hour.

Sometimes it can be a little bit longer depending on the number of veins that need to be treated. Only trained and licensed dermatologists should complete this type of medical procedure. Your doctor will likely warn you to take it easy in the upcoming days that follow. No type of exercise is permitted in the immediate days after.

It is suggested that before you take part in sclerotherapy, you should avoid specific medications. You should talk to your doctor regarding the medications that you are on and make sure that none of them have the propensity to interfere with your blood or the way that your body processes and pumps your blood.

Your legs should also be completely bare before your appointment. This means that no lotion or cream should be applied to them prior to the procedure. You should also try to avoid taking any type of aspirin or ibuprofen before your appointment as many of those medications can thin out your blood. If you must take something, Tylenol is the best choice as there shouldn't be any type of interaction or side effect from that particular medication.

Overall, this is a great option for specific people who struggle with unsightly and annoying varicose veins.
