Back Pain Advice For Shoppers

Information about back care is given to the customers at supermarkets in Grangemouth and Stirling.

The Keep Moving, Keep Living campaign, which is taking place during Back Care Awareness Week, will also feature preventing back pain techniques.

Physiotherapists and exercise consultants from NHS Forth Valley will visit Asda in Grangemouth and Sainsbury's in Stirling.

Back ache is thought to cost the Scottish economy up to £1bn every year.

The campaign will include video screens that will show shoppers the exercise classes held at Grangemouth leisure centreas a part of the campaign program.

Staying healthy

Customers at Sainsbury's supermarket will get the chance to be able to talk to consultants and local physiotherapists in Stirling.

"This is a very good opportunity to get the message across that movement and exercise are a very important part of staying healthy, Norma Turvill, a physiotherapist with Forth Valley Back Pain Service, said.

"Back pain that is long term can play havoc with the lifestyle, both at work and home."

"As physiotherapists we spend a lot of time telling people how important it is to keep active and encouraging them to find some form of regular exercise that can be enjoyable."

Up to four out of five people will experience back pain lasting more than a day at some time in their life have been estimated.

Reduce Back Discomfort And Stress By Correcting Posture

There are lots of demands during these holiday seasons, another contributor to back discomfort is stress, this can be experienced from work and other causes.

Here are the U.S. National Athletic Trainers' Association offers these helpful tips:

- Body stresses such as poor posture, improper lifting techniques, and weak or tight muscles should be identified. Strengthen your back by carrying lighter loads and use luggage carts for packages and suitcases that are heavy.

- Yoga and swimming should be considered as stretching activities that can increase mobility of the muscles.

- Remember to increase the overall strength by exercise that involves the whole body.

- Aerobic exercises should be done like swimming, walking, and running for at least 20 minutes for three times a week.

- While sitting for a long period of time is best to practice good posture.

Why Are Teenagers Ignoring Back Pain Signs?

In the new study, it is suggested that Britain's teenagers are more  particular with stuffs such as money and their friends rather than the state of their health.

It is also stated that according to reseach that was carried out by the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), some 22% of girls admitted that they do not have exercise programs during outside of school hours.

Also, research reveals that for an additional hour a week n top of activities they engage in at school, only 20% of boys exercise.

Chiropractor Tim Hutchful, of the BCA, said: "Today's teens have become so engulfed in their social lives and with their appearance that the most important thing which is their personal health seems to have slipped off their agenda.

"Many teenagers are ignoring aches and pains which could lead to back and joint problems in later life."

47% of teenagers do not go and get medical advice when they are in pain or feel unwell and that more than 60% have already experienced some type of backache, as shown in the studies.

The research found that the main cause of back pain among teenagers in the UK is awkward position when sleeping (81%), followed by carrying heavy bags (76%), and sitting for long periods of time in the same position (59%).
